I would agree with the others to return the turtle to where it came from. It's understandable to want to help it seeing that it was missing a leg but I can tell you from personal experience that a three legged turtle not only will survive but live a long productive life.
During a field study we observed a very old female midland painted (Chrysemys p. marginata) with the same injury nesting and basking.
Hey, they're tough critters having made it through the past 250 millions years.

If the turtle's leg wound is healed up, it has obviously been able to survive with the injury for some time. Just let it go if you are not able to take care of it. It will be fine. As for the crackhead, well call the game commission and tell them some crazy hobo is trying to catch deer or something. Be creative!
we were really ticked off at ourselves, we forgot to get his license plate...

I don't smoke, neither do I take animals out of their native habitat that belong there.

I don't smoke either (eventhough the pothead offered me some I said no). But you must realize that there are many animals we keep that a wild caught. Be it a snake, lizard, fish, etc. they are wild caught. even it we have a animal that's captive bred how do you think their ansisters got into captivity? They didn't just apear there. Besides I have him in my pond right now and I'm going to try to move him into my 150 gallon tank later.:)

Then it doesn't mean it has to be rehomed then :) I think the point of the sparks was there was no point in you removing the turtle from its habitat just to have to pass it on because you can't care for it.

Maybe I can keep him. I'll have to get my parents to let me though because they say I have to many turtles (I only have three right now and the legel limit is five).

I think the big issue here is -- if you can't take care of it, why take it? It got nothing to do with it being wild-caught or captive-bred.

He seems to have no trouble swiming asfar as I can tell. He goes allover my pond when nobody's looking (as far as he knows)

look, we also need to make this point. when we first caught, we didnt realize he had 3 legs, we caught and brought him back to where we were keeping all of our stuff, i was looking for more turtles when fishyz called me and said, we need to keep this guy, he only has three legs. its not like we just said, theres a turtle with three legs, lets catch it and keep it, we caught it, examined it, noticed it had three legs and we felt that it needed a home. if it makes u guys that happy we'll return it.
