the only time this is an issue is in a place like Florida, where if you catch an exotic invasive species, like a tilapia or something...you're not supposed to realease it. Then the issue comes up, do you just kill it, because I sure as heck am not going to eat a tilapia or uro caught in the miami canals

"I sure as heck am not going to eat a tilapia or uro caught in the miami canals "

lol that was funny. We went fishing this am and my wife caught a duck in the lake .The duck swam through her line and got tangled up. Most ducks avoid us but this group of ducks seemed insane .

It went crazy starting screaming duck noises and panting so I ran in the water only 3 feet deep through a towel on its head and ungtangled it. I was a bit nervous . After it was free it swam back with its friends.

Either way I always release non natives .Talipia or not I am not going to kill it .

Yah FL is good for non-native fish

Yes there is a lot of water here, and lots of connecting water ways so its pretty easy for any fish to spread through FL.

However what gets me is that many people think bowfin are FL non-natives, when in fact they are native to FL. They dont hurt bass popluations either, you see tons of bass where there are bowfin. Anyways we fish from the shore of my bf's lake and catch them =] We also rent canoes and fish for them. I catch them in the springs on live bait and in my bf's backyard I use rapala lures.

I do agree its stupid to kill a fish just to kill the fish. If your going to kill eat it, use it or dont kill it. Its not that hard. I've stated the rest of my feelings above =]

I actually didnt know bowfin were native to Florida either till read it in this forum few months ago.

I disagree, p4p. What's to say a life of a fish is worth more than a human? People are overpopulated, fish species are being depleted. While it would be a stretch for me if it was a common fish species, if he killed an endangered fish, I say fry him. Criminal punishment only serves its purpose if it causes individuals to act differently when there is otherwise an inclination to act unlawfully.
good idea lets kill any body who harms an animal nobody matters anymore aborption is ok. now i know what kind of people vote for obama:D sorry for the exaggeration but i am glad someone values me more then fish:headbang2

Let's throw a rhetorical out there. Alpine mountains rescue dog has saved three lives in the past year. This dog has another 4 years of service left, during which he will save another five lives.

On the other side of the scale, you've got a serial rapist. Violent acts against 14 women. Paroled once and attacked another 3 women. Rehabilitation was tried and obviously unsuccessful. Currently in jail serving a life sentence.

Which life is more valuable to you? My choice is clear.

the guy said that the pikeminnows weren't native(claimed he had been fishing the creek for years, ignorant) i explained that they were indeed one of the few native fish in CA, that all the catfish, bass and perch except for the sacramento perch, were all introduced species back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, he just mumbled thanks for the history lesson. i don't kill any fish i catch either, except for when i accidentally gut hook them, which i've been able to mostly cut down on. if i were to kill non-native fish(which i've thought of starting) i'd probably either cut their heads off or have an ice chest full of ice on hand, and then either give them to people who are going to eat them or sell them to a local gas station which i've heard buys fish. my last fishing trip i caught a 3lb channel cat, an 8~10" sunfish(largest i'v ever seen) and a 5" sunfish, all three of which were given to some people fishing nearby who planned to eat them, i practice catch and release.
mikeberg, there's also a bounty on sacramento pikeminnows in a certain river, apparently to try to improve salmon runs. i believe most states which have a bounty on pikeminnows is because the pikes are introduced.

For the fact that the dog is not just the dog but another five people would make the choice clear it is like comparing one person to five.

Indirectly yes, one person against five. Immediate choice is the dog or the rapist. Just my way of illustrating that a human life is not necessarily worth more than an animal's.

yeah it makes sense just pointing out the problem stated.
