Ticking Timebomb Tank

Update-

Goin from green to yellow. The Dorado are takin to the lower level in the tank. Not sure if its the constant pacing of the Aro that's forcing them down, if they are just getting confrontational, or if they are just trying to shoal with the Armatus. Either way the Armatus are getting uneasy. The Dorado stick together where as the Armatus simply tolerate eachother. The Dorado are never alone. They swim up and stop next to an Armatus and there is always more then one. Armatus moves and at least 2 Dorado follow. No charging or aggresive behavior yet but its clear the Armatus are on their toes. It seems the Dorado are intimidating the Armatus through teamwork. The rays constant climbing of the walls isn't helping the situation. May end up moving the Aro if things progress to aggressive behavior to see if that will bring the Dorado up to the top of the water column. Can't tell if the Dorado are just trying to swim with the Armatus or if their intentions go deeper then that. Whatever it is that's goin on its clear the Odoes don't want any involvement. They just sit at the top... Cynos continue to swim nonchalantly in the middle, melow as always. Dirty lil Dodos need to just quit being so darty and things would be fine. Maybe I just need to up feedings to twice a day rather then once. Tick tock lol!!

i think the dorados are trying to intimidate them.
my old dorado looked like it was trying to group with the tarpon and ATF.
next day, both were beat up and dead.
i'd keep a close eye.
my old school of dorados used to group around a fish before beating it to a pulp too.

In an attempt to make life in this tank less stressfull for everyone I've increased the frequency of feedings.

Appears the Dorado need to be fed more frequently then the Armatus. Armatus seem perfectly content eating one large meal a day, the Dorado on the other hand eat smaller amounts but more frequent.

After the increased feedings I've noticed the whole tank seems happier. They almost seem to "play". I tried catching some video of this last night but didn't have much luck due to only being able to shoot 30 seconds at a time. About 1/2 hour after the end of feeding I saw the Armatus and Dorado "racing" back and forth. After a while all the fish began pacing back and forth in one big group. Did notice one Armatus had a nip on it's dorsal and tail but it looks like similar stuff to when all the Armatus were together in thier growout, they didn't all stay perfect all the time.

Still no obvious signs of aggression (charging, jaw flapping, or flaring).

No signs of the "intimidating" behavior the Dorado exhibited since the feedings have been increased.

Hopefully they'll continue to play nice. Tomorrow will be a week they've been together. Honestly, that's a week longer then I expected it to last.

:headbang2 Hows that saying go? No guts, No monster? :D

Thanks man!

Yeah the Aro's still in there. He just keeps to the very top of the tank. Seems to want nothing to do with all the "hoopla" going on down below. :nilly:

that tank is making me think of selling all my cichla and going back to characins...

Thanks mate! I'd be honored to be the cause of getting you back into Characins.... Don't know how else I can repay you for helping talk me into just saying to hell with it and tossing everything together. Without that influence this tank wouldn't exist.

Characins are a pain. No doubt. But when a Characin tank works it's second to none in my opinion.

I wouldn't have anything else in with my rays. I have tanks for rays, that is my main focus. But ray only tanks are boring. You can mix other fish with rays if you want to use a scoop shovel to throw food in there to insure some gets down to the rays, but with Characins the rays always seem to get plenty to eat.

dorados remind me of a herd of stone/drunk frat boys. increased feeding will def help.

tanks looking good. Once you go Characin, you never go back.
