dorados remind me of a herd of stone/drunk frat boys. increased feeding will def help.

Once you go Characin, you never go back.

Couldn't agree more with both statements. Amazing how the Dorados can snap out of this "haze" they're in bumping into each other all clumsy looking as soon as they smell food. Pure Jeckyl and Hyde.

I'm with you the dorado will eat considerably less then other fish but eat way more often. It's the same thing I do with my dorado feed often and he's content.

I'm still very envious of this tank. I wish I had a few more dorado or armatus.

Figured it's time for an update. They are all still "tolerating" eachother but aggression has hightened to nipped fins. Unfortunately it's the Armatus with the nipped fins. Pretty sure it's the Dorado but I can't say for sure. I need to catch them in the act to confirm. I may have to remove a few Dorado. To anyone contemplating this combination I think it would be wise to have more Armatus then Dorado. Said it before and I'll say it again, dirty lil dodos.

How big are they now?

I just picked up an armatus for my tank yesterday and he's cohabing well with my dorado so far but he's still 3" or more smaller so the dorado still has dominance. I'll hopefully be adding some other dithers her soon so if someone wants to get pissy they can shank one of them instead of each other.

sweet setup brett!!!!!! Hope to see ya again sooon!!!!

:banhim::ROFL:Brett doesn't have any Armatus, and this definetly isn't his tank.

Koop, the Dorado are about 6-7 and the Armatus are from 6-8. There are more Dorado then anything else, and the Cynos tend to run with the Dorado. They seem to gain courage with numbers. If this persists after adding a trio of some big widebar silver dollars then I'll just remove 1 or 2 of the Dorado.

have you seen the armatus being attacked yet?
im intending to try this combo as soon as i can afford it...LOL

Nope. It all seemed to happen at once and nothing since. I probobly slacked on feeding again. The Dorado weren't eating everytime I fed so I backed feedings off again. I suppose its possible its the Cynos causing problems rather then the Dorado.

yeah you don't wnat them teaming up and overwhelming the armatus.

How do feedings look do you feed heavy or do they all feed rather clam?

Aro always eats first as his size seems to intimidate, unless the Dorado are hungry. If they are they'll hit food within the first few inches of water. Odoes do the same, they won't venture down into the mid to lower part of the tank for food. Armatus are actually pretty patient and wait for smelt to get at least halfway down. An Armatus will grab a piece then swim off then the next one will do the same and so on. If I toss a handfull in most ends up on the bottom as ray food. They've always been fed smelt pieces 1 by 1. Occasionally 2 will go after the same piece, if so the loser just grabs the next piece. I've tried shooting feeding vids but they all still seem real skiddish around the camera. Cynos strangely only eat off the bottom. I usually feed pretty heavy quantity wise cause the rays don't allow uneaten food to sit in the tank. However if I was to walk up to the tank and throw a few handfulls in I'm sure I'd have some hungry fish and plump rays. The Armatus will only take free falling food. Dorado seldom pick up food off the bottom, assuming cause of how aggressive the rays eat. I usually spend 5-10 minutes feeding this tank. I really need to get a different means of shooting vids. 30 seconds does no justice for this tank...
