BTW - Bret just called me about something else, and he confirmed that his tig ate plenty of shrimp when it was smaller, no problem.

Cool, I've just read numerous times that it was a big no no from other experienced tig keepers (people who have and are keeping 4 or more tigs).

I had complications when I fed both of mine shrimps too when they were younger. So I guess it may not apply to all the tigs.

Personally I'm at a loss as to what type of health issue would be caused by feeding a juvenile catfish such as a tig, shrimp? Anyone have any theories as to why shrimp may be a problem? Perhaps it wasn't the shrimp, but a case of too much shrimp, and not a balanced diet.

T1KARMANN:

I wish people would do some research and read all my old threads about growing small tigs

You do have a chance of saving the tig even if he's upside down as I had one upside down once and it was still feeding

I'm sorry to say but if you had read all my old threads on tigs you will find chances are you have done the damage yourself by feeding shrimp

Small tigs below 12 inch seam to have problems digesting shrimp prawn and other salt foods

So I am guessing it's the salt content in the shrimp? Feeders fish didn't seem to be any problems for juvies.

So says he. I know who T1Karman is, but I suspect that if indeed shrimp is a problem due to salt content, it would have to be from feeding massive amounts of this foodstuff & not a properly balanced diet. Salt content could also vary greatly depending on the source of the shrimp, as well as how it has been processed.

I personally fed my 2 tigs small pieces of chopped shrimp back then and they regurgitated them after a few days. They were 6" to 8" at the time.

Feeders weren't an issue, but they just couldn't keep the shrimp down (partially digested when regurgitated).

At that time, I suspected it was the shrimp and tried another brand of frozen market shrimp. But got the same result.

With everything I've read and my personal experience, I would not feed shrimp to any of my Juvenile tigs in the future, but that's just me.

Its up to people what they feed small tigs I'm just going on what i have found and try to help others from losing small tigs

i lost about 4 small small tigs after feeding shrimp/prawn the tig seam to puff up and look bloated as they seam to have problems digesting bits of shrimp below 12 inch

the problem is people want to grow small tigs fast and power feed the tig this is not good as tigs are crap hunters and wouldn't get as much food in the wild as they get in a tank

if you power feed a tig shrimp every day chances are it will die

look around and you will find that a lot of tigs die at a size of 6-8 inch after people power feed with shrimp

the advice i am giving is not to feed shrimp until the tig gets past 12 inch at that size they seam to be able to digest more meaty food if you take the advice is up to you but why take the risk with a expensive fish that will do great if you feed pellets

what you need is lots and i mean lots of air in the tank a temp of about 84 with lots of water flow

as for tank size i would say you need a foot print of at least 7 x 3 but 7 x 4 would be better for life

That sounds more like a case of operator error (power feeding), than a problem with feeding shrimp. There's already 2 individuals in this thread that had no issues when feeding shrimp/prawn to juvie tigs, so obviously juvie tigs can digest shrimp/MP, but there's probably a limit as to how much they can assimilate at any given time.

Tigs are predators in the wild, so they obviously have the ability to assimilate meat, such as shrimp/prawns, fish, etc.
