Sure the syphon can handle the full load but there will always be some bounce in the overflow... hence the second drain taking on the extra flow. If sized properly the second drain will have no problem handling the full flow if something backed up the main and will be chugging quite loud.

There isnt much turbulence or bounce if the siphon and e drain stand pipes are positioned with some planning. E drain just below the weir of the overflow and the water level (within the overflow) just below the e drain. The water level being closer to the top of the over flow make the system run silently

But yeah a small trickle down the e drain isnt going to cause a major issue as long as its sized properly like you mentioned.

Definitely go sump. J jaws7777 and I have setups that run very similar. I have a 55 gal turned into a sump filtering my 220. I run it full siphon and it’s completely silent. I can’t even hear it standing right next to it.

Would you use factory overflows?
The owner of my LFS doesn’t like the overflows, says they can become traps and tough to clean.

Does anyone echo that sentiment

I probably misunderstanding but what does he plan on doing with the bulkheads ? Back of the tank ?

I’ve never had a tank with factory overflows, but I feel that they eliminate a large amount of room in the tank. I have also heard that they are hard to clean. I used the H2Overflows by Custom Aquariums and love them. They are pricey, but I think they are much better in the tank than the large factory overflow boxes. The only thing with them is that you will have to leave room behind your tank for the plumbing so you can’t have a setup sitting flush against the wall. Here’s some pictures of the overflows installed in my tank:

That’s a cool setup. I use an external overflow in my SW tank.

J jaws7777 im talking about buying a drilled tank but not using the factory overflows-
Still using bulkheads just omitting those
Black half circles they put over the holes to Hide the plumbing.

Since I have a peninsula, I thought that was essentially the best choice for me since I needed to be free of plumbing from three sides. My tank has been running for over 4 years and I have never had to need to clean/vacuum the overflow box as there's no detritus or anything to clean. I do every 6-9 months wipe the hard water build up on the teethe and make sure nothing stuck in the strainer on the full siphon. I'm just anal about that but it's not needed.

I wouldn't rule out not having them installed. If I were to do it again, I may have added 6" additional box on my end of the tank, maybe. Here are some pictures for visual.
