How do you tell if like me you buy some lights if they are T5 or T8?
I can't find anywhere on the fixture that says what it is.

I was thinking I can change out the bulbs to plant grow ones? Right?

Those look like t8 to me. t8's are 1", t5 are 5/8". You generally can't use t5 bulbs in a t8 fixture without retrofitting the hood to accept the t5, as they have different size sockets.
Also, I think you would get the same output with t5 as t8, as the ballast is what determines output, not the bulb itself.
You could easily change to t8 plant grow bulbs, which will be the same output, penetration, etc, just a different spectrum (usually more red for plants)

I measured them and they are 1in so T8 right?

Now that I know what they are thank you Gourami Swami Gourami Swami does anyone know a good bulb to use for plants?

Yup that is a t8. Zoomed makes some decent bulbs for plants, I think one with a red spectrum is called floralsun. But to be honest, a single t8 strip light in that hood is not going to grow much except very low light plants, no matter the bulb. Anubias and java fern, are about all I have had success growing, with lighting similar to this.

So you are saying it would be better to get a newer LED? Like Finnex 24/7 or something simular?

But this all goes with what fish I end up with right, the different set ups would have vastly different light/plants needs.

Like the African tank is no plant's tank so the bulbs/fixtures I have should be fine for them.
Tank 2 GT's would only be low light stuff like swords, vals,
Tank 3 JD tank I was just thinking of a lot of Water Sprites, so low light again.
Tank 4 RT are plant killers I hear so no plants.

Also thinking of shutting down my 55, and moving them fish to the 125 and add some more to fill the 125.

ATM there is the pair of HRPs on thier 5th go at spawning now. 3 Roseline sharks, would up that to 10ish. And 2 Blue Acura, not a pair yet but a male and female. Mind you all the cichlids are less than 2in. And an Albino Bristle nose pleco, and would add either a pack of pictus or corries?
Think any other cichlids could fit in there as well? Like some Firemouths or maybe a couple more HRPs, Jeff has some Platinum ones ATM.

With all of those setups, low light plants are probably your best option. Anubias and java, etc. Your lights would probably be fine for that sort of thing. If you see them starting to brown or melt, then maybe an upgrade to LED would be good. Beamswork makes nice LED fixtures cheap. I also own a finnex planted+ led and it works great for my low light plants.

Personally I would separate the HRPs and acaras, put the HRPs in the 125, get like 6-8 more of them (mostly females) with some livebearers. Could also try a single larger cichlid with all the HRPs, maybe a nicaraguense. I had a similar setup to this with panamensis and a larger hericthys, and it worked pretty well.

If you put the two pairs in the 125, im sure you can get some more cichlids like firemouths to live in there, but would just be kind of a mismatched setup. If you do put FM's I would put at least 5, they like a group.

Sounds good, I found those bulbs you spoke of, so will get them. Now to pick what set up to go with...The hard part right.....

Ok back to the star of this thread.

Toni has done a fair bit of pruning to the plant of DOOM now that she is no longer afraid of it. Especially with them SD's hiding in there. I have seen her do it in person. She bites the stalk and one quick jerk and she rips that leaf off then swims off with it....20180606_173454.jpg 20180606_173524.jpg 20180606_173539.jpg

So Toni has her first battle wound. The other day during a water change, I come back in the room and spooked her I guess so she jumps out of the water plops onto the middle top of the tank them splooosh back into the tank thru the other opening....

When I do water changes, the light gets moved to span across the two AC110s so I can take these homemade lids off. She landed right in the middle then swoosh into the water ....

See the line on her side...20180606_174048.jpg20180602_210705.jpg
