Too Overstocked?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's overkill to give the fish swimming room? :screwy:

And this is MFK. Go big or go home. :headbang2

um 1 oscar will do fine in a 75... let alone a 100-5 foot tank. min size for 1 oscar is 75 gallons so if he wanted he could have 2 oscars ALONE in a 100-5 foot tank with no other tankmates. but still i wouldnt add a gt.

uh...... nvm.

If you are a true problem solver then, sure add that GT. But if you dont know how to get things done then NO.

I think you have a large bioload. Given that filtration is sufficient and you do frequent water changes your fish should be ok. Polys are not super active (what polypterus do you have? Sorry if I missed it). Your tank is the same footprint as a 120 that I had except yours is shorter. 2 oscars will be ok. Again this is personal preference. I would say the average oscar is 12-14" I have to agree with jagd24 on this. You ask a question like this and some ppl are just totally overkill. It's ultimately your decision and your fish. Just my .02!
i have 3 sens 3 dels and a palmas polli
and the bioload is not that bad because i have a 100 gallon refuge/sump that is almost full of water so my water volume is about 170-180 gallons of water

Pyramid_Party: ok and im not getting a gt but why should i get rid of half the polys?

So youre saying a fish that averages around 14" should have at least a 2ft wide tank? So now the minimum tank size for one single oscar is a 120? 4x2x2? Or a 180 6x2x2?

Lets say you have a shoulder width of 20 inches. So you would be fine living in a house that was only 22 inches wide? An oscar CAN live in that tank but won't be very comfortable.
You can't make that comparison. Humans are not fish, fish are not humans- humans and fish have very different needs. Making that comparison is like me asking you "If I can put an 18" tall plant in a 18" diameter pot, then can I put an 18" fish in an 18" diameter aquarium?"

Anyway, to the OP: I think you should be fine as long as you don't run into aggression issues. Yes, the tank is overstocked, but it's also very overfiltered, so imo there's no need to remove any of your current fish as long as your water quality is alright (nitrate-40, preferrably less; nitrite-0; ammonia-0).

There are plenty of healthy people in jail. Unless you took some of the Amazon out and its in your back yard, any fish will not have exact and perfect living conditions.
