Too Overstocked?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm just saying the fish will prefer more room. To me it's like keeping a dog in a kennel.

you can't make that comparison.
Yes I can. Its the same thing. We can live in tiny spaces but we prefer and we should have larger ones. Same thing with fish. They can be kept in small tanks but they will obviously prefer a large one and be much happier.

There are plenty of healthy people in jail.
Yes but how happy are they? All I'm saying is although can live perfectly healthy in a tank two inches wider than they are long, they will be happier in a larger tank.

Again, fish are not humans. Humans require much more space due to the fact that we are highly social and inquisitive creatures, if we were kept alone in confined spaces, it would result in either insanity or suicide (or both). Fish do not have the mental capacity to experience either of these issues, which is why we are able to keep them in glass boxes in the first place. Trying to compare them to humans is just ignorant. If fish required the same amount of space as humans (proportionally), arapaimag would not be able to properly house a guppy.

^^^^^ I agree with both of your posts guys. THis is where it comes down to personal preference and your own personal morals. Like I said before, unless you have the amazon in your back yard, you are not anywhere close to proper housing.

Indeed you can't give a fish it's preferred environment but that's no reason to give him the smallest space you can. I agree with younglin. Don't get the gt unless your current tank is a grow out

so you think an 18"wide tank is too small for an oscar? Again, do you think a single oscar should be housed in a 180? By itself?

+1 I really don't understand these people's logic.

I hate how gung-ho some people are about stocking "rules" and the like. Fish are living creatures, every one is going to be different. Dont listen to the people flaming you dude, id say with a 5 ft 100g tank and a 100 gallon sump, youd be completely fine adding a GT. hell, get 2 if you want. In the long run if it becomes a problem you can always take fish out or move them around

You can't make that comparison. Humans are not fish, fish are not humans- humans and fish have very different needs. Making that comparison is like me asking you "If I can put an 18" tall plant in a 18" diameter pot, then can I put an 18" fish in an 18" diameter aquarium?"

Anyway, to the OP: I think you should be fine as long as you don't run into aggression issues. Yes, the tank is overstocked, but it's also very overfiltered, so imo there's no need to remove any of your current fish as long as your water quality is alright (nitrate-40, preferrably less; nitrite-0; ammonia-0).

Thats what I said, you can always switch things up if it doesnt work..
