Touch my DOVII and i'll...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I sympathize gents, i really do.

BUT, Oz is at risk from introduced (i think the term is feral) species wiping out its native flora and fauna, and something needs doing to combat this.

Koi, are basically colourful carp... and as we all know, carp will destroy a water way within a year, turning it into a mud hole.

It seems like the irresponsible minority (or should it be majority?? cant imagine why someone with a 300 Gal tank would want rid of a dovii.) have ruined it for the people who take care of their animals, and ensure they don't escape into the wild.

Best advice i can give. Keep a low profile. cherish what you have, and never let on :)

Just to open this up a little. Are rabbits, rats, dogs, cats, sheep, camels (odd one i know) birds of prey etc all banned as pets / livestock? i think not.

All introduced, at massive detriment to the natural environment. Seems a massive step for something i cant see being as huge a problem as the government are making out.

Surely the natural predators (lung fish, crocs) combined with dry season (surrvived by killifish, lungfish via adaptation alone) will combat any prolonged problems with these fish?

Anyone who knows more about this, please feel free to chip in.

What books have you been reading . Crocodiles and Lungfish inhibit a very small portion of our waterways, most natural species are members of the Perch and Bass families and grow to a similiar size (moderately larger) than most American Cichlids, say the same size as a Dovii (24"~).

yeah we don't have many crocs in the swan river. and i'm almost definite we don't have lungfish lol

the most predatory thing we have in perth is a black bream hehehe

so yeah, CA/SA cichlids released to our waterways could very well be detrimental to our native fish.

at least we'd have good game fishing on our doorstep :) jk

Ooooff. Guess too many years of watching crocodile hunter and rex hunt fishing adventures has led me down the wrong path eh?

Thought you boys had all sorts of hardened killers living in your back yard ponds :)

Guessing a rogue SA/CA would cause a fair glut of damage then.

Appologies for my lack of knowledge, its based around discovery channel programs. :D

I agree, that's what The Crocodile Hunter would lead you to believe about Austrailia lol.

As far as the ban on fish, I've thought of an idea. What if certain people could be licensed to keep them? The gov't could send them thru an education class on the importance of not releasing them into the wild and even charge a fee lol. Just an idea .

GL with this it seems like such an unfair law.

hehehe yeah we all have pet kangaroos called skippy too lol

there are a few areas in australia up north where these cihlids could survive happily. but in suburbia - where most people would get affected by these new laws - it gets too cold for most cichlids to survive, let alone breed

i agree with you balton777. its an educational course and license system that would ensure cichlids are looked after, cared and passed on in a safe manner

also..... SERIOUSLY, KOI????

G'day Cuban and all,

I beleive Koi have been noxious (banned) in Queensland for years.

Hopefully lots more discussion will be allowed between hobbyists and Govt. before any action taken over these proposed new laws.

cheers

i agree you carnt blame the government but this just a easy fix solution for them just to ban fish and not let able sane persons to keep them. they can come up with better alternative if they tryed

And for the few areas up north were they can survie i think every one has over looked our native barramundi a full grown barra could eat any child altough it may choke on a male dovi.

Yeah, barramundi are cool but get too big for most aquarists. Cichlids stay at a managable size. They also have nice colors, come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and have awesome personality which carries a lot of weight with me. Another thing I love is the parental care they give their offspring.

Being able to eat another fish is cool but not at the top of my list. The bottom line is that there's nothing local in Austrailia that can replace Central/South American cichlids and it's going to suck so bad if they're banned. Period. :(
