Most rocks are a no unless they are completly smood. But yes sand its a must, if your not doing sand at the very least get rid of the colored gravel, its the main thing there that can really cause harm to your turtles. Also as they grow you will have to get rid of the fake plants because even young softys like to chew plastic plants wich can be really dangerous if they swallow a bit

Dogs don't need toys or playtime to survive/be healthy, but it would be cruel to deprive them of that.

Get sand. If you didn't want sand, then you should not have bought a turtle that relishes digging in sand.
True, its such a plain simple thing to do and can very much inprove their lifes. I have washed beach sand on all my indoor turt habitats and so far no trobble and also it aint that hard to clean

The plant thing makes since too me, and I will keep that in mind, so thanks for that. However sand improving their lives at a young age, and rock being damaging lol right. Lets hear or see proof of any of that to back this up. Just because they like to dig in it does not mean they have to have it, or that it has anything to do with general health. Also I am sorry but little smooth pebbles are not going to hurt them I hope someone was not trying to say it would actually hurt their shell cause that would be a real funny statement. I know exactly how hard and easy sand is to deal with in tanks I have kept fish for 17 plus years just do not favor it and if you don't like my choice well that's too bad we will just see how these turtles turn out..

they could eat the sharp rocks.

ultimately, thats a not a good tank at all for those turtles and we were giving constructive criticism for better health of the animal not to challenge your beleifs. you sound just like one of those guys that come into the store. "ba ba ba ive been keeping fish longer than you've been alive!!" "how unfortunate for the fish."

Soft shells (as their names imply) have very soft shells. Hard and sharp rocks will damage them very easily, just from them crawling along the bottom. If its really smooth gravel, it may work okay, but sand is definitely the best for them.

And really, sand isn't at all hard to do. You wash it like you wash gravel, and other than maybe 15-30 minutes of cloudy water (depending on how well you wash it) it doesn't create any problems unless you run an UGF.

My two largest tanks, both 125g's, have sand in them. One play sand, and one tahitian moon sand. I love both kinds, and am so glad I used sand over gravel. It looks nicer, the fish look great over it, plants love it, and I'm sure a softshell would love it if I had one.

It really would be better for the turtles if you could replace the gravel with sand. It may not be a life or death type of thing, but it is a comfort for them to be able to bury and hide, and a quality of life decision.

oh a store worker how cute most of you guys know nothing about fish anyhow so what..

none of you are reading or using your eyes I guess because when have you ever seen small garde aquarium rocks that are sharp?? huh when lfs worker go to your shop and look at the bags lol they are smooooooth bud smooth meaning you could not cut a tomato with them let alone a freakin turtle

like I said to begin with I knew this would be a debate but regardless if you like it or not sorry NO SAND in the future and the turtles will be just fine because of it thanks for the concern though ;)
