Psittacus are a very durable fish. Nothing like Panda's. As long as your water in not real hard and high PH all you have to do is keep the nitrates down and they are no issue at all. The Rio Negro psittacus are a little more sensitive but they are not what is commonly available.

As far as keeping sensitive CA cichlids. Panda's are a different world in my opinion. A sensitive CA is a fish that gets bloat. A sensitive SA cichlid is a fish that requires perfect water, low PH, soft water, good food. In other words everything has to be perfect. There is a reason they cost so much and that they are not available in the current market.

Don't get me wrong. They are a stunning fish and a great oppurtunity for an advanced hobbiest looking for a real challenge. But no one should fool themselves with what they are getting into.

caribemob, Rapps sold some wild stock a few years back. I have a lone male from the importation. There are still a few of them around. People that provided them with the right water and worked hard to keep them had some success. To many people foolishly bought them thinking they could dump them into any tap water and they would be fine. I believe Jeff has even still had issues with some of the F1's in the past as well. They are just extremely sensitive to any illness and do not recover well. If you start with healthy fish, provide them proper water and care you have a good chance at success with them.
ok Jc good info I was just confused but since you still have some of rapps old stock than I guess its the water quality. :) Hey do you have recent pics, would love to see him:popcorn:

The people you spoke to probably got that bad batch from Rapps that were wild fish and all of a sudden it seems like everyone draws conclusion, me personally I'd like to see how these Don Imports hold up because it seems like we are going off the wild fish Rapps was selling a while back. Don't get me wrong they are nice fish, but like I said previously sombodies robbing sombody:(

Simple fact is that people that really knew what they were doing like Reagan, Ken Davis, and several others all had some success with Jeff's wild stock. Many others did not.

My lone male is in a 125g display tank at work with an RO drip system. He's in with some other normal Uarus. The RO unit does a 30g water change per day.

It's the correct water, clean water, and good luck with the initial aclimation. Mine came from Ken over a year ago after he lost the female. So I got a healthy aclimated fish to begin with.

sounds good Jc:D

Ok I am home and will add as much info as possible.

Water- changed 15% every Mon, Wed, Friday, Sun. Refilled the tank with aged water with a ph between 5.5-6.0. Kept the temp form 86-88.

Lighting- used a 10gl light of a 55gl tank and when I moved them to a 90gl I used a 20gl light.

Food. They ate food form Ken Davis Etreem check the spelling, peas, romaine Lettuce. and some Pleco food.

Tank setup. Did better with out gravel. not as hard to keep the tank clean.

Keep a group of 5-6 adults in a 75-90 gl.

I lost my female after a spawn. male ate the eggs and killed her. The lived together for over a year.

This is a 10 of a fish to keep. Not ment for everyone but i have a good feeling you will do well NorCaliCichlids.

If you get them pm me if you want more info and I will send you my cell number.

I don't know if you guys remember, but a few weeks ago Grey (wetspotcx) listed fernandezyepezi on aquabid for $40 a piece. I think they were 3-4". I asked him to ship me a group but he told me they came in rough, and that I should wait for week or two. Well, they all perished.... but that's what I like about Grey!

I somehow got the impression that fernandezyepezi and altum are similar in terms of difficulty, although I haven't kept either.

Sorry to derail but your right about Grey being stand up with you. I was at the importers facility The Cichlid Exchange (not the store) when these fernandezyepezi were there, picking up a few fish. I stood in front of that tank for a good 10 minutes just heart broken watching them... The staff was doing everything they could do but you could see the frustration in their faces knowing they wouldn't make it.

This is my main fear in getting them. Seems like the acclimation process is a very big crapshoot. I'm re-thinking this now. I'll test my water and then decide. I don't have the dinero to set up an RO system. Great info guys!

Exactly. Just because a person can buy a fish doesn't mean he can keep it alive. There is more skill in fishkeeping than buying fish.

I hope he corrects me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Reagan uses an RO water with his softwater fish. I think he uses peat and/or blackwater extract with great results.

Just to clarify, Don is a wholesaler and those are WHOLESALE prices. Vendors buy from Don and then mark up the fish. Jeff is no different. He may have bought from a different source that charged more thus the higher price. I dont think anyone is 'robbing' anyone. You could make the same case for Oliver's price on Ornatum and Atromaculatum if you wanted to but as a seller if you pay $75 per fish you need to mark it up significantly to make profit after importing them, feeding them, etc.
