Somebody's robbing somebody? Please clarify.

Exactly. Just because a person can buy a fish doesn't mean he can keep it alive. There is more skill in fishkeeping than buying fish.

I hope he corrects me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Reagan uses an RO water with his softwater fish. I think he uses peat and/or blackwater extract with great results.

you are correct. But it is allot more work. That is where the water change every other day with aged water comes in.

Any thoughts on spagnum moss rather that peat?

Both work. If you have fairly hard water though the effort to keep your Ph consistantly were you need it is unreal. RO is the way to go if you can.

Sorry to derail but your right about Grey being stand up with you. I was at the importers facility The Cichlid Exchange (not the store) when these fernandezyepezi were there, picking up a few fish. I stood in front of that tank for a good 10 minutes just heart broken watching them... The staff was doing everything they could do but you could see the frustration in their faces knowing they wouldn't make it.

And if I remember others' posts, Portland area tap water is pretty darn soft to begin with.

First warning here for attempted derails.

I dont look at that as derailing at all. Any and all info is welcome. Flowerpower, i'm leaning in a different direction now. I'm not worried about getting the tank ready but I am worried about keeping the PH low after water changes. I'm still not reallyt sure. I may try some larger Beani and see how that goes. Been a while since I tried them. I'm still going to talk to Don about them again. So I reallllyyyyy haven't made up my mind.

IMO, a fish is worth what people are willing to pay for it. If you don't want high dollar cichlids, don't buy them. Plenty of us will. I've watched certain albino color morphs of discus go for hundreds of dollars at quarter to half-dollar size. Sometimes it's more about the challenge and the thrill of having something that very few aquarists have. I gladly paid $80 a piece for the first batch of F1 fernandezyepezi and they were my favorite fish for nearly a year. Had I not run into water issues, they would still be my prized possessions. They were my Holy Grail cichlid. (Now it's switched to Heroina isonycterina.)

I will say that, if you cannot give them soft, acidic water, they are probably not worth the money, time, effort, and possible heartache. That's coming from someone with first-hand experience. :(

Unless you're using rainwater or have an extremely soft supply, I'd say it's probably the only way to go. As far as I'm aware almost anything that softens the water such as Peat/Buffers don't affect the TDS of the water.
