Umbee or Dovii

So If I were to buy 10 Umbee juvies and grow them out in a 120 gallon tank... and keep a male if I could find one,, would it be impossible?

but the odds are 1 an 10 that you will have a male in that pack of 10 and once they start killing each other you will lose about 7 or 8 of them so then the odds are not good and at that size it is possible that a female can kill a male.

that would be the best fish just my opinon, but do'nt get me wrong dovi are on the top of the cichlid food chain as well i think the diffrent is one is just harder to find then the other an harder to sex, if dovi was harder to get i think every body would be dying for a dovi male, thats why i have both and would not give them up for nothing.

hmmm so out of a whole batch of eggs a umbee lays,,, mot of
them are female?

Little is known.. Some people seem to have trouble finding males out of a batch of umbies from one supplier while other suppliers seem to have higher male/female ratios in fry. So yeah there have been people who supposedly have bought many and got no males and some who claim to buy a couple and get a male or multiple males. Such a hard fish to sex though it's hard to tell if you have a male or female alot of times until they're pretty good sized.

If I were trying to get a male umbie I would buy a multiple of 6 or however many you have room for from someone who others have gotten umbies from and gotten a good male ratio and grow them out in seperate tanks. I'll warn you though that females will be difficult to get rid of as they have little value.

Someone needs to stop skipping their statistics class! :naughty:

Seriously though, it is possible to manipulate gender ratios in many species by adjusting the pH, etc. The "magic bullet" hasn't been found yet with umbees, but something is clearly taking place (unintentionally) with those suppliers that are getting mostly females.

I know on some species all you have to do is manipulate the temperature up or down to get a higher ratio of male or females.

well looks like im starting to like the Umbee more...

I knwo both get to about the same lengths,,, or at least what I have seen in aquariums... But it looks like the Umbee weighs more,, in pictures it looks like they have more girth, muscular and taller looking? or would they weigh about the same fully grown?

I think your math is mistaken on this one lol.

If you buy a baby fish, you have a 50% chance its gona be male.

if you buy 10 fish and want one to be a male, you have over a 100% i believe.
