Under stocked vs over stocked...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No doubt that it would take a lot of effort to try and maintain a tank like those pictured...

But i personally at least cant see the appeal of cramming as many fish into a tank as possible...

So, in the end, we get back to aesthetics of the thing? to the "appeal factor", which is what I was alluding at in the other thread?

That was just my personal view, but at the same time i wouldnt want to have to put in so much time every day to keep the fish healthy neither :)

And i always wondered when i see tanks like that, if fish could talk, would they complain its cramped or would they be happy?

Overstock going to understock on my community due to (1) maintenance (2) space issues (cringe) and (3) less food needed. Currently selling and disposing (giving away free, YEHEY!) some of my fish. I however found/read in the past few weeks about the benefits of overstocking overly aggressive fish, midevils for example. Keeps them calm as they said based on experience so maybe I will try that in the future. Problem is, my eyes still tend to wonder onto the overstocking side when I see too many empty spaces but I get to control myself now <Trust me, I hate myself for impulse buys.>. I hope!

Love how people assume they have mass die offs n just replace them. Is there any proof were a keeper is replacing g fish on a daily? Weekly? Monthly? Basis
This is a hobby and people enjoy there hobbies diffrently.

In my case, I wasn't assuming anything. In the case of the one tank that Alex posted, one which I had referred to earlier in this discussion, in the very thread where that photo was originally posted the OP stated;
Lost some of the fish while I was away on a 1 month vacation from Asia. Also sold some but got some new ones as well

And of course this isn't the first time where he had posted how he had lost fish while out of town for a few days, or one of his more aggro fish had outright killed other fish. (I guess they weren't in the schooling mood?) or whatever. MFK isn't the only forum where he posts, and I've read & seen plenty enough over the years to base my comments on facts stated by the owner himself, and not assume anything, other than he must have a lot more disposable income than I do.

I still maintain that to keep a tank like that requires a ton of effort and maintenance skill at the disposal of rather few and qualified, keepers ( does any fish look unhealthy?).

Really Miguel? How so?

How much effort and/or skill does it take to run a garden hose once or twice a week?

IMO there is little skill in running tanks such as those displayed by Alex. As an example, the "schooling" tank that a few have referred to is 96x30x30 inches (373 gallon), with a lowered water level it's probably at or just below 300 gallons most of the time. At the time of the photo that tank was receiving a single water change each week, IF that, and the filtration was a "ghetto sump" as the owner described it, filled with kitchen sponges & pot scrubbers. FYI - some of the fish in that tank are longer than the tank is wide, and after that photo was posted several other fish in the 18" size range were added - with the OP stating that there was plenty of room for more.

Pages & pages of people slapping him on the back on a job well done, including a few of the mods here on MFK.

BTW Miguel, you ask if any fish looks unhealthy? My response to that is when a fish in a tank such as this does become unhealthy, most people will never know as the owner will simply replace it with another specimen. Also, snap shots taken in a single moment in time seldom reflect what is taking place over the long haul. I personally don't measure success in weeks, or months. Some of those fish have the capacity to live 20 yrs or more in captivity.

Also from that same thread. Look healthy to you, Miguel?

Here is the male umbee cichlid in this comm tank

Most of those fish in those tanks do not show the spectacular colors that their species is capable of, however they show them in more moderately stocked tanks all over MFK, coincidence?

And I agree, a bare freshwater tank takes little "skill" to maintain, maybe setting up the filtration, but most systems don't take a genius. My point is, takes little actual "skill" to run one of these tanks.

He was away for a month. When someone else watches ur fish something bad always happens. I was away got a week in Vegas n a power outage in ny killed all my piranha in a dozen tanks. Most single serra's in there own tanks. So can't really blame someone for losing fish while away.

He lives with his mom & dad, or at least was at that time which is where that tank was located and from what I could gather his folks weren't performing maintenance while he was away, and there was no back up plan in place for power outages, or equipment failure. So, gone for a month = no water changes or filter cleaning for the month. Ooopsy, some of the fish didn't survive.

Sound like a responsible "Monster" fish keeper to you?

BTW - I'm not looking to hurt anyones rep here, nor am I a fish saint - like most people that have been in this hobby for any length of time I've killed a few fish along the way as well. Having said that, I personally know JDM tank owners, with automated set ups that are so high tech they took an engineer to design. (almost)

Even these people found this persons tank, and fishkeeping methods disgusting.

There are more than 100 fish in there and tank size is only 375g with 55g sump. Wish I can save up for a bigger tank. A 700g would be nice.
