URGENT: What's wrong with our lsn?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's good news, keep the water clean and continue treating with the 3X.

Second round of Triple Sulfa complete. Still won't eat (and is soooo thin) but the redness is almost completely gone now and he's still swimming around some (although not as much since that flap of skin or whatever it is at his eye came loose. not sure there's anything we can do about it...figure it'll die and fall off in time). Couple more pics...

So...pretty sure out guy finally started eating. We tried EVERYTHING! Shrimp pellets, bottom dweller pellets, raw cut fish, bloodworms, beef heart, krill...and I'm sure others. When he was still feeling yucky there were some Rosy Reds in there that we took out because they were picking on him. Since he's looking a LOT better, just extremely thin, we got a few more Rosys and a couple of guppies the other day. Haven't actually seen him eat any but I can't find any of the feeders (although there are some hiding spots we can't see) and I swear his belly looks a little more plump. Here's a before/after. I really don't want him eating just minnows but since that's all he seems to be interested in right now is it okay if he gets just those for a bit? We're going out of town and have been struggling on what to tell our house sitter to so for him but he can totally throw some feeders in there every few days. Oh, and his whiskers are still gone...would that effect his appetite?

Definitely looks like he ate ad is doing much better. The whiskers help them hunt food but they will grow back. I definitely wouldn't keep giving feeders especially if they are not quarantined for 2 weeks. Keep trying pellets as that was what he ate before

Thanks! I wish we'd had time to set up a qt tank for feeders before we leave. I just don't want him to starve to death before we get back (will be gone over a week). He has had NO interest in pellets in over a month and hasn't eaten a single thing (until last night) in two-three weeks. This is the first thing that's caught his interest at all :-/ our house sitter doesn't know a ton about fish so trying to come up with the simplest thing for himAND something that the fish will eat and hopefully put some weight back on. Right now you can just about see every bone :-/ My worry with having the house sitter attempt feed pellets while we're gone is that he doesn't eat them and it starts to mess with the water quality...not sure I could get him to do a water change on too of everything else we're asking of him lol (plus he's never done one). We do have over three times filtration on this tank and a water change will be done right before we leave.

I hear so many horror stories about house/fish sitters. Give very specific details of what they need to do, and absolutely do not divert from this plan without notifying you.

Oh, trust me...we learned our lesson last year when he over fed in the 150 and we came home to a disgusting, mold and bacteria filled tank with off the charts parameters. Had to break it down and almost start from scratch! Luckily the fish and turtles were fine. This time we're pre measuring everything for specific days. Other than dumping a little cup of food into the tank on certain days he's not to touch it lol

But the 50 gallon that this fish is in I just don't know what to do for...I could pre measure some pellets but if he doesn't eat them we're not here to keep an eye on the parameters (it's already a smaller tank with a big fish)...or I could just have the sitter go buy a few feeders a couple of times during the week. I DO hate putting feeders (especially from the pet store) in the tank with fish, and that's something we're trying to get away from by using cut/thawed fish for the tsn (and may breed our own feeders later), but that may be the lesser of two evils in this situation :-/

And just so no one asks why we don't get a house sitter that knows more about fish and tanks...we also have a newly adopted, 170 lb Great Dane who has some stranger danger issues that we're working on...he trumps the fish lol My house sitter is my step-brother, who Diego ADORES! We adopted Diego six months ago after he'd spent three years in a rescue kennel with little to no socialization so new people scare him and (although he's gotten a LOT better) he can react aggressively. This is the first time we're leaving him. Soooo...to keep things less stressful for him we have to have so one he knows and loves come in :) To give you an idea on why we're going this route...this is him and my step-brother. This is a dog that only a handful of people could touch for three years (he's only four by the way), he's bitten someone before and wanted to eat Casey the first couple of times he came over. As you can see, they now have a wonderful bromance lol :)

I'd not worry about having to resort to feeder fish for a short time. The LSN just cheated death and is still not out of the woods yet - if he eats something, I'd give it to him all he wants.

I think, if the filtration can handle the LSN all of a sudden (unlikely though) eating all the rosies, IDK, a dozen or two of them, I'd leave him with a bunch of rosies and just ask your brother to observe. It is a real bad timing right now for you to leave when you appear to be so close to the success, so your brother will have to be your eyes.

Lovely dane! So bad their lifespan averages ~7 years. My neighbor has one completely black right now, 2 years old, easily 200 lbs, and has had many of them over 30 years.
