Used Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
haha, The 100g I had was old probably should have been re-seamed when I got it, I think the fact that it wasn't sitting level caused the leak, it was terrible I lost my black ghost knife because of it, fortunately he was the only loss. To make sure I do not repeat this mistake I'm off the home depot for some shims and a level.

Still waiting to here back form the moving company, just got off the phone with an aquarium cleaner/ set up / fish store they said it would cost me $75 per person, which would end up being more then the tank itself

nooo dont' do it, i know big al do it for $50 (not per person) they get the job done no matter how many people it takes. and for me we do it for free upon purchasing the tank. anyway, i'd suggest you rather wait then paying them $150 to move that tank...way not worth it.

it took me and 3 other buddies to put my 220 on its stand in the wall i think it weights 400 empty

I agree, $150 to move a tank 15' is not how I roll even if I had the means.

my 150g tank that I bought from big als (Aqueon brand) weighs over 300 pounds empty.

not exactly sure how much since Aqueon's website says 281 pounds but older versions of their website say 338. both weights are for the modern double braced design..not sure which one is right. my Big Als store says it feels heavier than 281 pounds..and they move tanks all the time..

what I did was got Big Als to deliver it and put it on my stand for a small fee.

haha, wish i could, but the ressesion no body buys nothing, we can hardly make profit from the store now days, don't think i'd be going to New Jersy anytime soon lol. i've read that article too :D don't worry, as long as you put it perpendicular to the joists, a man weights 240pound, and is less then a foot, then what does that mean? house going to collapse? because that's 240psf, no...simply because is only on point of the house, but if you put 40 psf all over the house, then say bye to the house. and this is the part where not many people knows. fridge can weight up to 3000 pounds, and that's only 3 ft, so what? that's more then 500psf, simiply because the structure of house. if you are really worried, put it in the center of your house (center to the beam, not center of the living room) all my friends have tanks around 120G + they put upstairs for many years, nothing happens.

Refrigerators can weight up to 3000 pounds??? are you serious. What the heck you putting in that things weights . Your average refrigerator weight between 200 to 400 pounds not 3000. Were talking about an average refrigerator not a huge walk in freezer!

Now if the apartment is on the first floor your right its probably going to be on a concrete block so weights not an issue. However for the other people who read this thread because there there thinking about putting a big tank in there house then they should really give this article here a read which has already been post by the OP but I post it again. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/articles/article28.html

Now houses are made different especially older homes so what works for one may not work for another. Again its not the fact that the the tank will fall through the ground the problem is over time it can cause your floor to start to sag which will cause your tank to twist in return causing pressure on the seals and it can burst not mentioning your floor is now sagging and will need repaired.

My 150 in on the first floor but there is a basement underneath and what I did was got a 4x6 and three basement floor jacks. I put the 4x6 up again the joists the tanks set on and put the three basement floor jacks under it now most of the weight is transfered to the jacks and onto the concrete floor.

go to home deopt and see the fridge...is average home fridge, crazy right? i dont' believe at first also, but is true, that's their capacity, and that's what it is. an empty fridge is about only 100 pound. -i've post about my 220g sagging and all that, take look if you can find it, is "will my 220g crash or bent my house" something like that, of course is not going to collapse, but for sure will sag, i put 2 x 4 under my living room, but not 155, and old house is stronger then new house actually. anyway you believe your way, i believe my way, and i believe 20 gallon will bend and crash my house :)

I am a little confused here. an empty fridge is only 100 pounds? not any that I have seen. or helped move LOL

I also agree that there is no way a normal fridge/freezer even full of food can possibly weigh even close to 3000 pounds.

your average fridge weighs anywhere from 200 to 500 pounds, the big combo fridge freezers can even be 800-900 pounds.

even then you aren't going to put 2000 pounds of food in one :)
