Using wood to Scape a large setup. The “shelf” effect to build a riparium zone

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright . I just did a water change and lowered my water down quite a bit. I decided to take some pics to give you some clear close ups.

First set of four spans from left to right and is the shelf portion of the scape.

Here are some pics with the water level even lower.

You can see the long curvy pieces clearly in these pics where I have a total of three with the two on the left flowing down to the right.

The piece on the right corner flows down the opposite way to the left.

After taking the plants out after realizing I wasn’t happy with the layout, I decided to redecorate and get them back in.

I planted them further back in the center to open up some more room out front. What’s the point of a 48” deep tank if you can’t use it.

I planted at the corners where the base pieces of wood for the shelves meet the substrate. I then out he shortest plant to the right of center to give it a more natural look.

Keep in mind. These plants have been grown emersed. The leaves will ultimately die and fall off and new leaves will come in place. Given that this is a new setup, I put several root tabs under each crown and hope that the new leaves grow well. It’s important not to move swords around too much to keep their roots from being crushed and also letting them grow and spread throughout the substrate. One of the biggest reasons swords fail is due to that.

At the base of each sword I anchored them in with medium stones and then covered their roots further with smaller stones that you can buy by the bag at a Lowe’s or a Home Depot.

I’m much happier with this layout. Pothos will be addded up top in a few weeks to give it a riparium look when you face the tank.

Thank you. I like the look of tannins as well. A good tip I got from some discus guys is to put raw organic Roibos tea into bags and place them in the filter. It does a whole lot to help with the Brown look and is safe for the fish. Apparently it has a calming effect even though it doesn’t change the water parameters. I highly recommend giving it a shot.

With bigger tanks it’s probably more efficient to use peat moss. Just much cheaper. I love the tannin look. Will try on the 530g but based on size and drip, I’m not sure how long it will last really.

It’s actually much easier with the roibos. A little bit goes a long way. I used a small bag for my previous 180.

Just get a small mesh filter bag and out in a few scoops. You can always add more if you desire.
