I do agree with education the workers at LFS should have some kind of training know about the fish or at least have some kind of resources available if they don't know about the fish the at places like petsmart is that people walk up and say i wan't this fish and the worker says sure thing little do they know they just sold a red belly pacu to a person with a 10 gallon they should atleast say you know this fish gets several feet long or care remotely enough to ask what size tank they have

my petsmart has some very educated people, but the made me mad because they wouldn't sell me a clown knife because i'm under 18 and they didn't believe i can take care of it.
I also think that some monsters should be special order like the really huge catfish (rtc and tsn) but the 1.5-2 foot (like lima shovelnose catfish) monsters should be readily available as they are not as hard to rehome.

I am the petcare manager for a petsmart And I wish i was able to order fish that a customer wanted if i felt they were educated in the MF The Wanted! If a customer wants a Pacu I Will Tell Them How Large They Get And How Hard It Is To Get Rid Of Them. That Usally Makes Them Understand. So Yea I Feel Special Ordering Is a Very Good Idea.

should people need a license to have kids ???

yeah restrict the breeders lol. kids are half the problem anyway. they want the cute RTC at 3" and their parents give in after a few minutes of whining.
but to be serious kids are a large part of the problem as are their soft parents. but if you put licenses on huge monsters like pacu, RTC etc and huge price tags to boot then it would only be the hardcore who would have them.
although shops have a moral responsibility to behave correctly people are just as responsible since the birth of the internet as its not hard to find info on a chosen species now. "i didnt know" is no longer an excuse!

It's a difficult subject from both sides.

You have the lfs that buys in fish that will sell at wholesale and then wants rid asap(not accusing all lfs of this just a general view)

You have folks who want 'that' fish, regardless of the size and consequences and the 'I'll get another tank if needed' that won't because they've seen it at said LFS.

I would never go out and buy a fish that I knew nothing about but it's a vicious circle, people will and do and this results in many fish deaths but on the other hand if they were never there to begin with there wouldn't be an option to house that 'x' fish in the right environment that keeps challenging us all.

Take John for example how many people would take on a gigas knowing what could happen and then follow through and do it not to mention the $ involved, not many. Your average joe wouldn't do that. 2400 gigas tank?, no not big enough, 5000 gigas tank, nope 10000 will be better.
From the other side of the pond you guys seem to have a thing about petsmart/wallmart selling unsuitable fish to all, to sum up I think that reading and education on fish sold/bought is the answer. Just my opinion but over here we get a new law a day for no reason so I'm for no restrictions other wise we wouldn't be able to view tanks like johns with envy and joy.

Educate the wholesalers, LFS and public, job done. It sounds so simple when put like that.

No offense meant, you were posting that as I was replying to this thread. I was generalising on posts made over the time I've been here.

I think the only way to help resolve this issue is to have a special order policy. At the store i work at (and most others in my area) we will order a fish and WE WILL KEEP IT for a week or until it is eating and is healthy. But this doesn't always work because we got a RTC at 2" in early January and the guy it was for said he would be in the next day to pick it up, and the guy still hasn't shown up.

Banning the monster fish wouldnt do anything except make a new market for fish. Its like a lot of thing, if somebody wants them they can get them, its just a matter of how hard do you want to look.

Educating LFS employees...second best option, at the store i work at, it is myself, another employee and the owner that actually know what we're talking about. So while i know what needs to be taught, it is tough because there is so much information and not enough time to teach it.

the problem is that in todays world no one cares about anything anymore. LFS don't care what happens to the fish after it leaves the store, the consumer wont care if the fish is in too small of a tank.........it's a never ending battle.

thats complete crap. while some stores may operate like that, alot of stores dont (i.e. the good stores dont). So i think that if you have seen this problem you might want to find a new store to go to. At our store we not only ask what tankmates/size of tank/maintence schedual, but we take into acount character, if sombody comes in and is blatantely lying to us we dont sell them anything, just like if somebody comes in and asks for an Oscar and says they have a 10 gal tank, we explain to them that an Oscar's not an option. So while i dont think you were trying to be rude, next time preface your comments with "some stores.." or "stores around me..." or even "really stupid people work at my LFS and they dont understand..."

I hate restrictions! If you think permits for the consumer will fix it you are wrong. I am currently trying to get a Florida gar with permission from the Fish and Game. They told me I could waste my time trying, but when I release the gar into the local water ways it may decimate the local wild life

Looks like the only option they leave me is to break the law and smuggle one in (just kidding, the gas would be roughly 5 times the cost of the fish)
