I think the only way to help resolve this issue is to have a special order policy. At the store i work at (and most others in my area) we will order a fish and WE WILL KEEP IT for a week or until it is eating and is healthy. But this doesn't always work because we got a RTC at 2" in early January and the guy it was for said he would be in the next day to pick it up, and the guy still hasn't shown up.

Banning the monster fish wouldnt do anything except make a new market for fish. Its like a lot of thing, if somebody wants them they can get them, its just a matter of how hard do you want to look.

Educating LFS employees...second best option, at the store i work at, it is myself, another employee and the owner that actually know what we're talking about. So while i know what needs to be taught, it is tough because there is so much information and not enough time to teach it.

thats complete crap. while some stores may operate like that, alot of stores dont (i.e. the good stores dont). So i think that if you have seen this problem you might want to find a new store to go to. At our store we not only ask what tankmates/size of tank/maintence schedual, but we take into acount character, if sombody comes in and is blatantely lying to us we dont sell them anything, just like if somebody comes in and asks for an Oscar and says they have a 10 gal tank, we explain to them that an Oscar's not an option. So while i dont think you were trying to be rude, next time preface your comments with "some stores.." or "stores around me..." or even "really stupid people work at my LFS and they dont understand..."

Special ordering fish is a billion times better than a complete ban. I agree ^

All options have their pros and cons, but I think special ordering would be the best option. That way, people would only buy HUGE fish after doing their research and getting the right tank. I also think that ANY petstore should interview candidates before hiring them. Employees should be knowledgeable about what they're selling! It would be like hiring someone for a car shop who knows nothing about cars. It's silly!
I think that Tank size, Special order, and More info at LFS get my vote. These fish don't need to be banned! They should just have a higher price tag, so that only serious MFKrs will buy them... after they scrape up enough money... like I'm trying to do:nilly:

IMO the only thing to do is let the people know how big their fish is gonna get compared to their tank, but not too= extremes.

At my local Petco they have the max. size of the fish listed, but not in very big obvious lettering. its just a little notation thing, there should be a big sign in birght letters on the fish tank that says "this dude gets really effin big"

I highly agree that lfs need to do a lot more in educating their customers when it comes to large fish. Most employees don't raise large fish themselves to pass on their experience. When I bought my RTC, the store had them priced and labeled as Rapheal cats. I knew what I was getting and got a nice price. My wife went back to the store TWICE to tell them what they were selling!:screwy:

I know a lot about fish, and I never got hired by Big Als or any other lfs :irked:

Maybe a home inspection or a few picture of the tank to proof that your captable of keeping a monster fish like RTC / TSN...

Else, anyone can just goto a store and make up stuff. Just like this...

I have a 300G tank with a 10" RTG and a few 6"+ IT datnoid and I am looking for some RTC / TSN for the tank, so the bottom wouldnt look so empty. I want this 2" RTC, it will be in my grow out tank till it big enough for my big tank. Done! The fish is bagged and out of the store. :nilly:

(Sucker, I dont even have a 300G, it wont even fit thru the basement door) :nilly:

All very good points. I think that they should show a picture of a HUGE black pacu when they sell it. Just so people know what they're getting themselves into.

It would be one thing to educate LFS owners/employees, but when you have places like Wal-Mart selling pacus with misleading labels that tell the consumer that the fish reaches a maximum size of 10" you have a far bigger problem. Regulation and permits are not fiscally feasible and there are already restrictions on many species. Unfortunately for us, the only way regulation of monster species is ever going to happen is if they simply ban them. I don't like it any more than the rest of you, that's just how it is.

There should be a ban on Pacus, Aros, RTCs, and most monster fish at all pet stores like Petsmart and Petsupermarket. Even Walmart carries things like Pacus and incorrectly labels their information. The majority of these fish get sold while theyre very small and the customers are not educated at all of what they're getting into.

Yeah, but they'll sue F&G for not letting them keep certain fish even though they're not illegal. I agree, though, wal-mart and other similar stores should NOT carry pacus etc.

For real!!! You cannot imagine how many ads on Craigslist I've seen for pacus! There are more pacus on Craigslist than oscars! What is the world coming to?:nilly:
