One armed student/teacher could have saved dozens of lives. Its unfortunate that many college campuses nationwide take away the right for ADULTS who legally can arm and protect them selves. Things need to change. If the 200,000+ gun laws on the books couldnt prevent this tragedy then making more will not. What will is more armed civilians. I hate to break it to you but the police arent here to protect us. According to court ruling they have no obligations to protect a single citizen.
I'm not in the law enforcement field but in the security field but i still interact with police officers. THEY ARE HERE TO PROTECT CITIZENS. That's why their motto has always been "TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE" This is America,a great land for the people by the people. We are the people, we are the law, and we ESTABLISHED THE POLICE TO UPHOLD THE LAW AND TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS. Otherwise, might as well disband them but i think that's not necessary as all the police officers i have seen do know about this FACT even if some people consider them aholes or such (usually not deserved) or they wouldn't be storming the place i work at armed to the teeth looking for one person armed with a gun and considered dangerous to the community.

Yea, a few days short of columbine, i'm in aus...we had Martin O'brian do a big massacre down in Port Author, Tasmania, back in '96.
Watch Bowling for Columbine by Micheal Moore, its an amazing documentary that looks into gun laws in America.
I don't think this is anything to do with columbine, i mean, the dates. Its just horrendous how they are so close together.
Things can be prevented, this didn't. Like someone else said, people need guts to take action when things like this happened.
Heart goes out to the victims, and the people who lost freinds.

Anyone familiar with firearms knows that the sound of a gunshot is unmistakable and obvious. Its becoming increasing clear that in today's world, our law enforcement officials, campus administrators, and others in office are not actually preventing crime and acting merely as responders after the fact, and we've got to take responsibility for our own safety. I hate to sound like some gung-ho redneck (no offense to anyone), but I'm certain that cowards like Cho Seung-Hui or the Columbine shooters wouldn't go shooting in places where they felt they might be shot back at.

I don't want to start a whole new discussion but I don't know that a couple people being armed would deter a nut that plans to shoot up the school. I think it would only make them trickier or add another element to their plan as to not get shot first.
After all in most instances the shooters don't go quietly and one would have to think, they consider what happens after they run out of bullets or have shot who they want to shoot.
