Dang sorry to hear

I gave up trying to keep air disks in one spot. I just let them hang 2 inches from the ground and dangle

Still laying on his side/back breathing. Considering putting it down this evening if it doesn't make a quick startling recovery.

Thanks for the words though everyone. But all in all its just a fish and already have replacements in a grow out.:) Sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't.

As for as the rays they will always be my primary fish in this setup and if the tank mates I choose can't hang with them then it will be their demise.
That includes the replacements (Armatus Trio)

I do agree Vamp that the disc are a pain to keep in one place, don't really want to hang them and am considering removing them totally. Didn't use them for all these years anyways. Might just put them in the sump though.

In my experience, when they show the symptoms that your fish is showing, they don't recover. They'll do the lay there breathing thing for an extended period of time. Eventually, as the involuntary nervous system starts to shut down (the brain is already dead), the fish will begin to spasm more and more violently. Eventually it will stop breathing or jump out in one of it's random spasm fits. I put them out when they start acting like yours is.

I've had some that did the upside down thing and after 20 minutes they recover. However if yours is doing that for a long time there may not be any hope.

I've always said ATF are very particular fish. Their habitat needs to be tailored to them. They cannot be a fish to add to your "collection". In order for them to be truly happy they need to be the priority fish. The tank needs to be built around them. I don't see them thriving in a tank set up for other types of fish.

This all may be accurate Sashi but all I can say is that my VATF cohabitated for 3+ yrs with these rays and if I hadn't been hanging in the tank to spook him he would still be alive. No matter I just put him down and enjoyed the time I had him.

Here is a final pic.
