They won't. Russia is no Iraq or Afghanistan or North Korea. Its government is no real pushover.
Bassicly this is what i understand:
1.
A state / region from georgie has seperated itself, reason: Russia has the northern or southern part and they believe it should be united.
2.
Georgie their president has shown in the past that he wants to be allies with the EU / VN, he is not interested in beeing an Rus ally.
3.
Georgie offers EU a way to provide them with a gas and oil line. Russia doesnt want that, they want to have this right alone.

So what does russia? They fuel the sepperatists campaigns by funding the economy, giving out Russian passports etc.
The two Georgie regions claim independance: No VN member aknowledges this claim.
The sepperatists keep attacking Georgie, but Georgie cannot attack back.
Until georgie has enough and invades after another attack (source: Reuters/De Pers)
Result: Russia finally grabs their chance and *****slaps georgie all around, bombs economic important key locations outside the region of conflict and conquers not only the two seperated regions but also cities outside these regions.
Thus they do not act as peace keepers but as agressors.
How i see it, is like the Senator of Florida says one day: Guys... Great job but remove 1 of those stars of your flag because we no longer want to be part of the USA. Thanks for the cake and cookies and bubye. And then China comes in, who owns practicly 80% of all real estate in USA and says:
Hey guys here are some passports and we further expand our chinatown.
Untill USA says: Well Florida its time to join the family again. But noooo China comes in with their 2 biljoin citizens and woopsmack USA right of the chart of existance.
Strange right? But thats whats going on in Georgie.
Basicly what still puzzles me is:
What was the Georgie president thinking: To think that EU, USA and VN would come over and help them out?
Suuure.. They help USA in their war against terror. They offer EU a way to lay gaslines and oil lines outside of Russian territory. They openly want to be a VN member. But to think their 'allies' would come over and help...
