War in Russia!

South Ossetia is by full rights an independent state and it is NOT part of Georgia. If Kosovo is Considered an independent state From Serbia then so is South Ossetia an independent state from Georgia. Russia will not even entertain the idea of South Ossetia being "georgia" and they have damn good reason and now precedent not to...

It is also a Russian ally state with mostly Russian citizens. Russia will not stand by idle while this state is being invaded and Russian citizens are being shelled and killed, Nor will it when Georgia makes it's next move on Abkhazia either...

Regardless of the status of Georgia in the eyes of Washington and NATO it is going to get it's butt handed to them if Russia really does get involved. (So far they really have not aside from providing some aircover, airfield denial and recon for South Ossetia's indigenous forces)

Saakashvili can now kiss his butt goodbye with this stupid move of his....

Excuse me but I think you are a bit wrong (and need a history lesson)....Russia has never had it's "butt handed to them" ... They could have sat there in that hellhole and continued to pound the crap out of the Dushman for decades more if the desire was there to do so.. One however can only smash ants with a sledgehammer for so long.. (The US and NATO will learn this in due time...)

The mistakes of reorganization during the Transition phase From a Soviet to Russian force is also a thing of the past. The Russian armed forces in the Ossetia district, at this time, are some of the most battle hardened and well trained forces on the planet.. They are VERY VERY VERY far from inept...

Thank for playing but try again....

Past history and the present are two VERY different things! You might want to read up on the war Russia had with the Afghanis and the INTERNAL problems with their military that they COULD NOT solve! :D

Polypterus is one of the most wise people i know in terms of war history (and lampreys, and icthyology!). He explains his answers whilst you just go "try reading blah blah". What you've been told could just be propaganda against the Russian forces..

History IS NOT propaganda!

the way its told is.

I don't think any force on the face of the planet can beat a nation with STEALTH bombers, based out of Missouri, dropping huge payloads of GPS guided bombs from 30,000 feet. Especially in a conflict this small.

That said, who thinks we should take sides (and, of course, which side) and who thinks we should stay out of this?

Georgia currently has about 125 US troops stationed there, and they have petitioned for entry into NATO.

Georgia is a BIG U.S. ally and an important one in a region that isnt so pro-US. Georgia also has more troops in Iraq then any country other then the UK and US. It could get ugly. Did any one see the quick shot of Putin and Bush sitting next to each other in Bejing during the opening ceremonies? I wonder what they were talking about?!

Georgia is just on the other side of Turkey, not too far from Iraq. We could have as many troops there as we wanted.

Should we take sides?

I think if we do, alot of countries will. Beginnings of WWIII?

Did anyone actually read the article?

No they didn't. And those that clicked the link probably can't read. Ok, so I shouldn't knock anyone because I didn't read the article. Journalist that are reporting on the conflict are reporting without knowing what they are reporting about. Obama and McCain were fed incorrect information and both gave embarrassingly ignorant statements.

1. The leader of Georgia admitted to timing the intitial strike with the beginning of the Olympics because the big decision makers would be out of the country.

2. Russia is no more the bad guy in coming to the aid of South Ossetia than the U.S. was the bad guy for liberating Kuwait in Gulf One.

Ok, so now I'm gonna go read the article. I am wagering that there is an 80% chance that the reporting is crap.
