Water Quality

More media is probably never a bad thing... honestly you may want to go even smaller with the sock, like a 25 or 50 to keep all the really fine mess from making it's way in. Definitely have to make sure the sock is secured on the pump somehow to avoid bypass, especially if you're forgoing mech in the first tower

Yup i have 4 10 micron socks that i dont plan on using. Gonna get a fee of those unlockable zip ties too

Be even betterif i could get mine to reduce nitrates lol

What do you meam by screw in pipe cleaners ? The uniseals were surprisingly easy to install
clean outs. The screw on end pieces. Do they seal ok? or do they leak? If they do leak how'd you fix/stop it? I am going to make a set of these and can put them in sump so not really worried about it for me but I have a friends tank I'm caring for and tight budget. I thought id use a joey canister filter but buckets failed and cant find anything but the clean outs you used.

Lol im still condused on what the clean outs are ? Do you mean the caps at the top of the towers ? If so no just use some Teflon plumbers tape. Or the unions ? Connecting the towers ?

Nothings leaking as of yet.

I feel like my issues from the last filter resulted because of using the silicone and connecting multiple towers...im thinking any slight movements between the towers put pressure on the siliconed areas and slightly broke the seal.

Yeah the caps. In the plumbing world those would be used to gain access to the pipe to clean it out. Cool I need to up the filtration on my friends 135. Badly.

Oh duh sorry man. But yeah no leaks

So I posted something like this about me and being lazy lately (more like stupid busy at work and the fact its spring grass needs cutting and yard work to be done) but the short is my trates have risen a bit. I was doing 15-20gal changes 2 times a week that kept it around 20ppm lately ( last 3 weeks) ive been doing 1 50-60% change I'm at 40ppm this morning and last change saw 40ppm also. Moral is smaller more frequent changes are better.

So quite a few years ago I purchased a product (piece of equipment) that reduced nitrates in any type of tank salt ,fresh didn't matter. It did work! There was a disclaimer that stated if the seal was broken no warranty on the equipment. I think it came with a really long warranty too. Any way I opened it. I am going to from memory try to build one. I figured with my trates creeping up and a limited time on this tank we will see if....
1. I can recreate this item, if I remember it was kind of expensive
2. If my recreation will work as good as original and or what some of use are using now.
I should be able to recreate this in my "spare" time lol

Thats kind of why im staying away from dosing. Not that i know from experience with it but that was my fear....miss a few doses and have nitrate spikes. Thanks for posting your results.

I prefer larger water changes over smaller. I do two fin level wcs a week and it keeps them in check, if i tried 15 to gal water changes it wouldnt put a dent in nitrates as it doesnt account for the daily nitrate creep.

I have a whole home nitrate filter salt based ion exchange system. Im gonna email them and see if they have a smaller product. My issue is the system backflushes every so often and has a drain run out of my house as there are no draines in the basement (sump pit)

Yeah in relation to tank size you're kinda doing what I was doing.... well I was only doing roughly 1/3 volume changes though. I could drain all or most 2 times a week but I don't like huge changes like that.
