water softener salt vs aquarium salt thread

ok, so how do you use the salt in your tank.
for example, i put 1 tablespoon aquarium salt in per 5 gallons. when i do a water change, i replenish the appropriate amount of salt per gallons changed.

The water softener salt is kind of (chunky)? so how would you measure out how much to put in, and do you replace with water changes?

I've gotten to the point now where I dont need to measure it. I can eyeball it and get it within .5 salinity of where I want it. But yes, after every water change I replace the salt. But I only use salt for my 300 and my 240. Also, I always have a Salinity test kit handy so I know I'm on track salinity wise. I like to keep my 300 gallon at .20 and my 240 gallon at .30/.40

good questions
i did some math, not sure how right i am lol
aquarium salt says 1tbs per 5g
mfk ich treatment says 3tbs per 5g
i scooped 24 tbs in the 1lb salt box and it fills it
so im saying 24tbs=1lb
i been using the mfk amount lately
opinions on this??.....

i was thinking weigh out a lb
and read your other quote lol :D

I heard someone say once that they use one cup of chunky for every 100 gallons.
I've never measured how much I put in, but that sounds about right.....

i just dont undertand why i didnt put 2 and 2 together with the salt thing. i just assumed aquarium salt was "SPECIAL".:irked:

It will test as low as .01 ppm.
They are not that easy to find.
Go for between 5 and 6 bucks.

it is special, it has a "special" price.

i measure out my salt the same as any other salt, and the morton salt is for the most part the same size as "aquarium" salt.
