I went to alligator alley yesterday from about 1-4. Drove 70 miles round trip to catch 0 fish... I only saw 1 gator too. He was about 7', so I was happy to see a alligator.

What's even worse then that, was the ammount of dead fish I saw! Literally more dead than alive. Jags, Myanas, cats, O's and Gars. All dead. I was sad to see this. I just thought I should share so you don't go to Alligator Alley when it's cold. :)

I walked the canal by work today since you told me about all the dead fish you saw. It was death all over. Just like by you and everyone else here.

Deep part of canal was okay "only" dead PB.

I posted pics but nothing all of you havent seen in large numbers.

The bottom was loaded with even natives gars, bull heads and large PB (well they arent native)

Where is lake monroe ? I am surprised that even in a lake which I imagine has depth even natives got hit.

sorry to hear that

You are in what was once known as Salvini Country .. Dont know what the cold did to that population. Was at Big Al's and they had a bunch of them in the tanks. LIke someoen caught a whole bunch and trade them in. Looking at the rest of the tanks the fish looked sick ..

I hope some salvini could go deep.

I will say on a bright note a guy was fishing the Tamiami canal today by my office and he caught foot long cichlids .

I saw one hit his hook. I just hope he didnt catch the last adults but if some lived there and now eating they lived by deep glades areas.

Yes death to the nonnatives
Let them perish
Adapt or die
Natives win

lol

The non natives here are harmless . Keep in mind these canals which most thrive in are man made .Peacock bass will starve without them(if any PB are left)

Without them canals are empty of life other than mosaquito fish . Putting that aside the gars (I think native) and native bull head cats death is brutal.

i wonder if florida will attempt to restock the pbass population if they were wiped out by this cold spell

Hmmm thats a good question. Never thought of that and many make a living here only on PB like guides, motels ,boat rentals, etc .

Lots come here mostly Spring to fall just for PB.

Even if many survived but population dwindled enough it will affect revenue .

N.Florida and S.Florida compete for fishing revenue . The North is cheaper when it comes to motels, most other things but they don't have PB only lmb .

If the south had a drastic reduction in PB . Imagine lots of fishing revenue would go north .

Makes sense Louie. It's a shame what happened to the fish. I have to check my local lakes to see what's going on with them.
