Before I started being happy about my 40 grand, I would secure the job first.

Indeed.....:(

Yeah but when you're a recent graduate, or in school you have big hopes and big dreams.. At least dreams of being able to afford a modest apartment and pay back all your school loans..

Mid 40's is good for a recent graduate but one has to take into account regional housing costs. In D.C. you might be scraping by with that salary I think. But you gotta start somewhere.

Either way, I make nothing right now....I need to find a job first.

Schooling: I worked my way through. I do not owe a cent, I was able to come up with the money each semester. Something I am very proud of. Housing? Going to rent a house with 4 other guys. I get my own room and bedroom, at 600 per month, utilities included.

I work now for a 67 million dollar credit union, small, slower paced...............guess what no economist. We set our rates from a subscription service called Bankrate. It shows you the local financial institutions and their rates. We stay compettive, we have an ALCO meeting every other Thursday we only buy CDs or Government agencies. None of the sub prime derivatives for us.

Good luck with your job hunt.

this is how we operate as well. $2b bank, no economist

well i got my BS in business admin / accounting. i found it fairly easy to find a job back in '05 when students in the rest of the business major were having trouble. accounting jobs are always hot stuff. i went thru my school's on-campus recruiting.

a year before i graduated, i had already signed my offer letter for a job in public accounting with a Big 4 firm. making $50k+ as a recent grad with no experience, i couldnt be happier. of course, i worked like a dog, but the experience was well worth it.

the jobs are out there, you just have to find the methods. career fairs, on campus recruiting, all that stuff. get to know the folks in your career center, or whatever its called at your school...

good luck

Thanks for the comments guys.

Just finished talking to my friend, who has a lower GPA then me, but has too many offers too choose from. What gives? Same school, same degree, same graduation date, LOWER GPA, yet more offers?

Well, apparently we have this thing called careers for terps, and we also have job fairs. My degree is SMOKING hot right now. I just need to go to the career fairs. I am heading to the next one with him, its in november!
This is the best thread you ever created.. not only did you help yourself get information but you helped lot of others that had the same questions... good luck to you.. at the career fair ...

Yea, me too. I am scared of the real world, tbh. I hate change.

Which is part of the reason I really wanted to get a job on campus, and continue my education :(

Oh well. I just have to suck it up, and keep on pushing.

I graduated in '05 with a degree in Business Admin and some experience but not much. Instead of trying to find a job I went straight back into grad school and got my MBA in Ops Mgmt. While not a direct replacement for experience, it helped a lot, and gave me a nice bump in starting salary as well. Look at industries that aren't as cyclical (and being an econ guy you should be able to figure that out) pharma, defense, etc etc. I work for an aerospace company - over half our contracts are military, so that gives me a fair amount of job security even when the economy takes a crap.
