What do you believe is cruelty or abuse when it comes to fish?

Hello; How do you get permission from a fish to touch it?
 
I think by "getting permission to touch them" he means, don't chase fish around the tank with your hands just because you want to poke/grab/pet them. It's different if you need to take them out to clean the tank or change tanks, etc. You can obviously tell if the fish isn't too keen on you manhandling it for your own pleasure. :/

Hello; I have not, in over fifty years of keeping fish, ever tried to pet a fish. I also have never manhandled a fish for pleasure. Am I missing something?
I do know they have never volunteered to be netted for me, even when it was in their best interest. I sometimes catch one pretty easy, but if i miss then they can be very hard to net. Even the ones that would take food from my hand were not eager to be netted. I have always netted my fish when ever it suited me with no regard for the wishes or feelings of the fish. I am sorry, but this fish permission concept is foreign to me.

I guess if there are people out there who get pleasure from handling, poking or petting fish, then I will have to come down on the side that it is their fish and their business even if I do not get it.

there is a deference between doing something you need to do to help your fish, and just handling him because you can, i am sure you already knew this so really not understand your post.

Hello; That was an attempt at a bit of tongue in cheek humor or perhaps satire. Not very good at that am I? I guess the concept that we should somehow think in terms of "fish permission" strikes me as odd. So does the concept of handling a fish for pleasure.
I do take into consideration what is best for my fish but not on that level.

I believe it is a common practice among fish breeders to cull (kill) undesireable individual fish. That is a practice that does not take account of the fishes feelings or wishes. By being in the hobby and buying from dealers, directly or indirectly, we are in effect supporting this practice. That there is a level of such cruel practice has been a part of the hobby for a long time. There are likely also similar negative practices thruout the hobby. I have seen a number of threads in the last few days about fish deaths during shipping. I suppose the only way to not be a party is to not keep the fish.

I will repeat an earlier point and ask some questions. I do not want some one or group in a position to dictate to me how to keep my fish. Also how will these rules be enforced? Will i have to get a fish keeping permit? Will i have to allow some agent to inspect my tanks and if so how will they be paid? Think about it. Be careful what you wish for.
 
I stand corrected SK, I perceived as a flippant response rather than humor. these are fish, we catch them, gut them, falia them and eat them. allot of the fish we keep in tanks are food in other countries and here. these fish are caught and killed on the spot, as i have done many times. On the other hand if you are keeping fish and subjecting them to any thing less for them to live a healthy happy life, then you have crossed the line.

I agree with you :) I think she was talking about children, who poke their fish, or chase them around the tank with there hands, for no purpose.
