30 use RO/DI
1 Use tap

this blows my mind.......i dont know why

I would be willing to bet that alot of the votes are from people with only freshwater tanks that saw the poll or thread on the main page and voted. Obviously RC is going to be 99% saltwater with most of them being reef.

RODI 90.00% 54 voted
TAP 10.00% 6 voted

RO/DI 24.32% 9 Voted
Tap 75.68% 28 voted

they most likely noticed it was in the salt section after clicking on it though.......

Couple things need to be addressed here.

1. Most people on here are FOWLR guys. They dont need the rodi.

2. Most of the "reefers" are looking to waste money on things they dont need. Many probably DO need rodi. Many probably do not.

That being said...I have been running a densely stocked mixed reef, and had no issues, and great growth over that period of time.

RODI I have thousands of dollars in live stock corals and such to dare use Tap water.. I get no algae problems or anything..
Best investment..

Im in the same situation...but I use tap. I happen to have a very pure aquifer, Im lucky like that.

even with fish only with live rock tanks, why keep a tank if you cant afford to do it correctly.

i under stand some places have decent water.......but why not use RODI

If your local water source isn't too bad, then using RO/DI water would just remove carbonates, calcium, and other minerals... making it soft. You end up putting these back into your RO/DI when you mix in your salt. If you have no copper, phosphates, or nitrates from the tap, then there really isn't much of a reason to use RO/DI water. There are other things to be concerned with, but in more cases, those are so low that they wont be picked up by the test kits we use anyways.

"If your local water source isn't too bad"

Even if it wasnt "too bad" but it was a little bit bad.......why would you use it?

may not show on the test kits BUT:

if you do water changes with this water your ading it in (also taking some out with the junk water)

But when you top off (the cleanest water possible, pure water evraopes) and you add tap to top off......that just prettu much doubled what ever is in the water, seeing competly clean water evraoped leaving the rest behing and you top off with tap adding more.

so as time goes on it will show on our test kits....... maybe not instantly

Sure, only water evaporates, but elements are also consumed. So no, adding dechlorinated tap water for top off would not act as a doubler.

not doubler persay, that was a bit dramatic but does add up quickly.
what exactly is consumed?

not all of these people run sumps and fuges with micro refugiums. espically with FOWLR tanks. so theres no micro alages to pull un-wanted waste out...........

Inverts will consume iodine, corals will consume magnesium, calcium, trace, strontium, etc etc.
