What happened to ]v[FK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From the way I see it, MFK has grown by leaps and bounds. When I joined, I was #12769. The newest member is # 76640. When I joined, it was mostly very knowledgeable people. I didn't do much posting then, because I wasn't one of them. Almost everything typed on this board was accurate and informative. Now, with 76,000 members, it seems that every loudmouth with an opinion is chiming in whether or not they actually know anything. There is still a lot of very knowledgeable people on here, but they seem to have been diluted by the masses. You can find some great info, too, but you have to sift through the BS to find it.

Forums like this one go through cycles. People join/leave the hobby, people get tired of posting, people get sick, people lose interest. Part of it too is that sometimes everything that can be said about a particular topic has been said.

My sense has been that there is less flaming than there was when I first joined. Yes, there could be less BS posts but if mods become too strict, members will stop being members. I do think a lot of members are afraid to speak up because flaming still occurs. It's hard to stop it after the fact.
this^

at times all go through spells. I know i stay mainly in the gar forum(and here, lol) and we got through months with 2 or 3 threads active then suddenly we have 20 threads in 1 week.

red is right. problem is if they become too strict no one will want to post. the mods go through patchs too(admit it or not, dont care) where they will be super strict, others very calm and relaxed. just human nature. comes and goes.

xander is right. in the gar forum, we tend to scare some away. We dont try to. we are just tryin to get people to think for themselves, and use the stickys. Our fish of choise is 7 species(plus hybrids, which dont exist in the hobby). Quite simple to ID if people look, and check out the stickys.

Funny thing is the Gar forum is one of my favorites. I always get a response if I ask a question there are some cool knowledgable cats on that one. Maybe I ask the right questions. Lol! Though the response are few they're some of the best I get chock full of info. Those that do answer like that know who they are and I thank them. This problem seems to affect certain sub forums more than others. It's really strange that way.

Me too I help when I can. Chloe I didn't know you didn't keep fish anymore, why? I love my reps too but still gotta have my fish. They bring serenity to my otherwise chaotic life. Lol! Though I love the portability of my pythons. Heck ones keeping company right now.

just couldnt afford it once i moved out....for getting a snake lol but my best friend has them so i see them alot.

ha sorry chloe i was agreeing with the OP.
but yes you seem like you help too.
i still dont agree with your rat guts :P
but i really do think the younger people on here are what has driven this forum into the ground. there is no respect anymore bc half the posts are of some thirteen year old tryin to build a thousand gallon pond in there closet. so people have to flame others to make sure they are seriuos
its like a local pet store owner, he is a major dick but is prob the most knowledgeable person i know as far as snakes and fish. but he gives you a hard time and is very forward to make sure his animals are goin to a good home and that you take them seriuosly.

haha, well i didnt mean for it to happen, just got carried away with the hot water. and the snakes and homes got cleaned up straight after :D i wouldnt let them sit in it.xxx

Sounds good still think that makes this a little data basey. Lol! If we follow that line of thinking though the stickies should be more concise and focused. Maybe a good idea would be to put up a sticky about the more commonly kept fish in each subforum. Like full scientific names, common names, pics for I.D. purposes husbandry and such. Leave it open so those who want to can contribute and expand for future improvements. We keep none essential stuff like compliments off even if the info is worthy, eliminating clutter. Much better than a search option if you ask me.

That was Very very well put Xander. It sums up how i feel pretty well. I'm all for helping people when I can but sometimes get burnt out with recreating the wheel.

Mike, good one, you get my vote for funniest mod

Koltsix, what you suggest can be done....and alot of forums DO have that, it's a matter of what WE as a member put the time into making. Correct me if i'm wrong but alot of stickies came from regular members (some have gone on to become MOD since)? The information just has to hold water. You can even work with other members here to create that sticky.
