What is your most expensive fish you have now?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At this point in time, probably my clown loaches. I don't remember exactly, but I think it cost around $17/loach for my group of 6.

They might be overtaken by my future Burmese loaches, dwarf chain loaches, and roseline sharks, however. I'm hoping that price matching with my local aquarium store allows for lower prices, but if it doesn't, it'll probably cost $110-$160 or so for my planned numbers of each.
Keep those roselines safe. Most of the ones you see in the aquarium are wild caught , here in India. The govt has totally banned it's capture as their population got threatened due to overfishing.
Not very sure of how true the information is, but this is what I got to know from the lfs guy.
Also I had noticed that they got way pricey too fast and now they are nowhere to be seen in my city.

Thanks for the heads up. I have heard that they were endangered in the wild and that India's gov't doesn't want them exported, but good reminder nonetheless.
If the ones at my local aquarium store are wild caught, I'll ask if they can get some from the commercial farms instead. IMO, the wild caught ones should not be sold until India's gov't decides they have rebounded enough for it.

Oh, and you're pretty spot on about the price. 6 cm specimens are $15 where I am, meaning a minimum $90 purchase ($120 for me if I cannot price match) not counting tax.

So I'm definitely going to be keeping them safe. Not worth the risk to skimp on their care.

There is no question, these are the most expensive I have ever bought. I got a proven breeding group of 10. I was also the one who made them proven for the owner from whom I subsequently purchased them.

They are Hypancistrus L173

Did somebody say roseline sharks?

These were being quarantined for sale at the 2018 NEC weelkend. I wnsws up getting sick and had to cancel, so I kept them for myself and they went into the 150 gal. with the my clown loaches. I got them back then as imports.

Turns out those dwarf chain loaches cost $144, so they have overtaken my clown loaches as most expensive. (But as my signature says, I got 13 for the price of 12 because of a most generous employee! That was a very nice surprise).

My future striped kuhli loaches may surpass the clowns and rival the chains as well. They're not particularly expensive on an individual basis, but because I plan on getting 24, the price adds up.
Probably will cost around $120.

My "acceptance" of the price of higher end fish really evolved over the last 3 years. I started breeding bettas in 2019, and the only bettas I was interested in breeding were koi plakats. I imported my initial breeders from Indonesia and once I realized the amazing colours and quality I could get overseas vs here at home, I imported hundreds over the course of 3 years. My very first three were a splurge at like $40 each...by the end, I wasn't batting an eye at fish I "had" to have that were $100-150 each. However, even THAT was not nearly tip of the iceberg when it comes to imported bettas...

Few months ago I decided to get out of the betta world and back to my cichlids. Back in January I got it in my head that maybe I wanted a nice FH...after looking around, I found some juvie super red texas and have wanted one for many years, but never could justify the cost. With my new found look on "expensive" when it comes to fish, I decided I would go the responsible route and imported 6 x 2.5" baby SRT from Thailand for about $60 each which I thought/think was a steal lol. Hoping the little buggers mature nicely and I can get one or two really nice red texas keepers out of the group.

Still haven't manager to get the idea of a FH out of my head though...
