What kind of Hoplias is this?? Plz help with identification

There are different ways to ID wolves. Specifically with regards to lac/brasi/aus/mala/infermedius/microlepis. Aimara and curu I don't look at their jaw folds cause they are easy to identify. For the first mentioned fish the jaw folds are different. But intermedius and brasi need pore counts and lateral line scale counts to the difference b/w those two.

There's a iguaza river species version of these fish as well but that's an argument for another day. Lol.

Ok but why are aimara and curo so much easier? Of course aimara can be told apart when it reaches above 35" since it is the only species to do so (right?), but otherwise? And the distinction between aimara and curu, what is the best way to do it?

I guess u see so many of them and can figure it out is the simple answer as for other members here. But yes Aimara gets above 35 inches and is the biggest.

Difference is size and aggression. I think u already know. Jaw folds are same. But pores can tell the main difference. Curu have 4 patches of pores along the bottom jaw and Aimara have single pore running along the jaw line. Lateral line scale count is also different.

Lacardae is probably #2. Nice Aimara.

Let's see what moe214 moe214 thinks about the original pics too.
