What kind of Hoplias is this?? Plz help with identification

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say curupira also...and as far as the coloring mine would show gold from time to time.

Plz do not just post random pictures for indentification within this threat, better open your own.

Difference is size and aggression. I think u already know. Jaw folds are same. But pores can tell the main difference. Curu have 4 patches of pores along the bottom jaw and Aimara have single pore running along the jaw line. Lateral line scale count is also different.

Can you show me on the first 2 pictures where the pores are so i can see the 4 for myself? Also a juvenile aimara pic with only one pore would be awesome tom be able to compare.

I wasn't posting for identification, if you read what I wrote I said my old curupira.....so obviously I posted the pic for you to compare to.

Aimar has a row of single pores. Not just one single pore.

None of the pics here show the pores. But let me post a pic and save it and blow up the image and u can see little dots. This should help. Not my pic but should help make things easy to see.

Mine still showed dark colors on light substrate, it changed with its moods. Lol a couple times I thought it jumped out because it would blend in with the black background.

Uh ok so a curupira would show four lines of pores from the snout to the rear end of the jaw in four lines? This would mean a definite way to tell em apart ... if you had a chance to get quality pick from below. Problem is you would have to hold the fish in your hands like in your pic, or you would nee to take the photo from below a glass tank without any substrate.

The curu will have a patch of pores in a row. The Aimara will have one pore in a row. Here's another pic. Yes usually to ID the fish it will need to be held in ur hand. Real up close and detailed photo.
