What makes a leopoldi a black diamond variant?

so if the beautiful BD in your avatar didn't have the right type of under pattern it wouldn't be a BD despite the upper pattern? or if a more traditionally patterned leo did have the same underpattern it would be a BD despite not having the right upper markings?

yep, would like to know more about this too.

Hello David

Their is a difference with "normal" leopoldi and the BD and yes what you have said is also wright it is only skin deep. But their is a difference I have studied different animals in Taiwan earlier this year and BD have much more spots on top and the belly is also covered i white spots. As the earlier pictures show. Also the black is much more black then a normal leopoldi. The leopoldi covered in spot are beatifull but are still very nice leopoldi and not BD.
On the other hand I agree with you all these animals are leopoldi only a different variant. You know what I think their are only 3 or four species of freshwater stingrays and all the rest are variants of these species. And evolved in various patterns over the years.

The same you can see in Itaituba rays (P14).
There are a few ones that show many spots at the belly and these specimen have many and often large spots. But they are not darker then the ones with less spots as in leopoldi and they need very long to darken.
Pictures show my first Itaituba offspring, born in september 2005.

btw. this ray is NOT for sale!

The markings on a Black daimond are the same on al the animals I've seen till know. I've seen BD, only ones in Europe, and all had the same pattern on their belly. I've seen over 30 animals in Taiwan and Singapore and all had the same pattern. Also the pups looked all the same on their belly.
The spots on the belly of a P14 are much more random then of these BD.
Bud I agree with you David commerce is a big thing in this discussion. So lets keep it a very beatifulle Leopoldi.

Frank

I think that because these undermarkings are so inconsistant and the sample groups observed way too small it is impossible to use this as a characteristic to define a variant. It has little to do with biology and a lot to do with commerce and this is part of why scientists hold hobbyists in such generally low esteem

So are BD based on looks and undermarkings alone with ZERO genetics involved?

if you see a BD next to a normal leo you will see the diffrence :D

the black is blacker the white is whiter

as i stated at the start of this thread the spots on the under side of the disk is uniform on BD

very nice rays the cream of leopoldi if you can find them :D

im a fool to have dold mine :(

id give anything to find one :(

they are genetically smaller in size as compare to leo, grow slower as well.
my taiwan breeder agree to my observation too.i think my gallery still hv pic of my favourite made in singapore first F1 male bd:)
