How do people with Japenese style tanks maintain them? Is it really just crazy filteration and water changes, or is there more to it than that?

over filtration and a vigorous maintenance schedule, when it comes to over stocking there is very little room for mistakes and missing water changes without a bad outcome...

Lots of hard work, tons of water changes and massive filtration.

In return, a bad ass tank with lots of monsters and ridiculous feeding times.

It just seems to me to be an excuse to cram more fish into less space. Aren't we supposed to be mimicking natural environments? Am I really to believe that Japanese waters are that crowded? That would mean an Indian (from India) tank should be murky, sandy, and of really poor quality? I whole heartedly believe that regardless of how well you maintain the water and tank, the inhabitants are going to suffer in some way having to bump into others constantly, compete for food, deal with mating cycles unnaturally, etc. Just goes against what I always thought fish keeping was all about; the fish as pets, not as art or decoration.

no its not about mimicing natural environments... that isn't possible. Want to let your fish have natural environments? leave them in the wild

i will never complain about a japanese tank bc I have never seen one where the fish and water didn't look absolutely stunning and perfect

EXACTLY. Who is against, better not keep fish.

and i think its sumps that are biger than the tank its self(more warter)

more warter, eh? Hadn't thought of that

I'll be honest I dont agree with the whole cramping all those fish together thing but honestly aside from the extra cruelty (i put extra cause Miguel is right) it is amazing to wonder how all those fish can even exist in that same of a space. It is a sort of dark magic. It will never happen at my address but hey Ive learned "to each his own."

I suppose as useless as you feeling the need to assume that it is somehow magic to stuff a tank full of fish. There was no argument really, just my point of view.
In a nutshell, overstocking is NOT good unless it's intentional and then it's magically ok.

Thanks for you biased opinion.

This is a debate that in the end we will all have to agree to disagree. We as fish keepers have values we all hold true to and this debate really tests those values on either side. I think we should leave the thread as technical as possible as far as filtration and other aspects that answer the question of What makes these tanks possible.
