What makes Japenese style tanks possible?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There was a comment earlier on this thread that the only solution was to "agree to disagree". You are wrong. This debate is always made between the experienced and the inexperienced. The only way you can maintain a tank in the Japanese style is to know everything you are doing very well. While most overstocking rules are great for aquariacentral...it basically ends there...these are are rules made for BEGINNERS until you know how to handle your fish. Our hobby I can assure you is not about keeping fish, but keeping water. Once you have mastered that the fish will be fine. Check this tank out...im pretty sure he is a member here...

A lot of hobbyist can't even keep a motoro ray alive for long periods...this guy has tigrinus, Tiger rays, etc....whatever your argument....the tank speaks for itself...

Not my cup of tea, I don't like the look of a cramped tank.

As far as I know, and this could be wrong, but it does peice together. In Japan, they have a love of monster fish, but because most parts of Japan are so jammed packed, alot of the residents are unable to have very large tanks because of space restrictions. So they pack a bunch of large fish into a smaller tank, and just up the filtration and water changes to even it out, sort've.

This is one of my favourite examples:

because their homes are relatively small so they dont have room for a bunch of tanks so they get one monster tank and fill it up with fish...

I guess that was aimed at me..... I have been keeping fish since 91' thats about 16 years. At this point I would challenge someone to show me the fish I cant raise from birth into old age. Im no expert but I am quite seasoned. I think the debate was more not WANTING to keep these fish in these conditions and not if the person was ABLE. My occupation ENABLES me to be able to afford a SMALL OVERSTOCKED OVERFILTERED tank but I CHOOSE to own a LARGE MODERATELY STOCKED OVERFILTERED tank. I know the "acceptable" reason for the Jstyle tank is space which is quite funny in itself. Since you are in a situation where you are cramped due to a lack of space you burden the fish with the same situation. I have no need or want to see a 3 foot fish in a 4 foot tank with 20 other 10"-18" fish. Not my cup of tea. Like I said to each his own. If thats what u like feel free to!

Thanks for the input. Now I have one question........ how could that Arapaima POSSIBLY turn around?

I'm sure it was just used as a holding tank until it got moved into a pond or something. It looks far too healthy to have been housed there very long. I think it was just taken to show the size of it.

I have to admit to being facinated by those packed tanks but I dont think I would keep one.
