japanese style..its a kind of magic,. You need to know very well what you are doing to even come near...sorry.:)

+1 I could cram a bunch of fish in a tank but it still would be a far cry from japanese style. Takes much skills to accomplish those tanks and to try to mimick that.

no its not about mimicing natural environments... that isn't possible. Want to let your fish have natural environments? leave them in the wild

i will never complain about a japanese tank bc I have never seen one where the fish and water didn't look absolutely stunning and perfect

A+++ :headbang2 Every tank that everyone complains about has crystal clear water.. better off complaining about the guy down the street with the oscar in a 10g with green water.

Exactly. Downright it is biased. What I see is a bunch of people knowing zilch, complaining of ammonia, nitritres and nitrates etc, wit one guppy per gallon, which is something I do not see, in more than 30 years of fish kkeping of "so called japanese style ". To keep fish, to provide for fish, to cater for fish needs ( in an artificla encvironment as japanese style is someting that is not within, financial qand technical knowledge of everyone. I am sorry. No point arguing. I am basedm, because I

Face it! we are all japanese.

I suppose you add plain unconditioned tap water then? I would guess you keep those parameters well in order. Water quality is essential to their health; I think we can agree on that? It's naive to think that a stuffed tank provides the same quality, regardless of the attempt at filteration. Let's be reasonable here. and why not keep this without personal attacks? just a friendly debate.

PS, you might want to watch that "shortened word".

I think the majority of us are advanced enough aquarist to know without a doubt that just because its clear doesnt mean its good.

You two are terrible:D . This subject always turns ugly fast.

for me it is 3 in the morning..am standing up, old and tired warrior that I am, champion for japanese style...who wants to joust??:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

You have very valid points Miguel and there is a part of me that cannot disagree. But I like Crash (please stop me if im wrong) believe that although we are imprisoning these fish, being responsible, we TRY to replicate their natural environments to the best of our abilities. Although in the grand scheme of things we all realize that this is not at all possible. But to cramp these fish together in such a small space it is hard for many of us to justify this behavior no matter how much filtration.

Three things needed to own and properly maintain tanks such as these. Money, knowledge and commitment. The first of the three mentioned is probably the most easiest obtained. Stocking levels will always be up for debate, because it really boils down to personal preference.

I myself like the look of these tanks but for myself it's just not for me.

First off, the un-PC version for Japanese is what I was referring to, used by Miguel not once, but 3 times in 2 posts. Just giving advanced warning since it seems to be a sensitive subject per other threads.
As for this Japanese style, I do like the look and probably would not have the patience to keep up with it, let alone the time, and admire those that do. I just don't think that a fish is living up to it's potential considering stunting of growth in cramped quarters, aggression levels either increased or decreased (I'd guess both would be bad), and overall health for the fish. On top of this, wouldn't Japanese style lend itself to Japanese fish?
