What tank size to go with??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would really appreciate it but no rush.

I really don’t care there’s plenty of room. The tank was going to be 3 feet. My wife may not be crazy about the idea but whatever is going to give me the most room and options for filtration is what I’ll go with.

If that’s the case, then I would really recommend drilling the tank in the back, similar to my setup. If you go through the thread I posted then you can see how open the bottom of my tank looks compared to the bottom of a “factory drilled” tank with a weir.

Hopefully I'm not breaking a rule. That is the overflow I found. They have 800gph to 2400gph versions. They will customize it too. If you are going to drill this is what I'd use.

Man I really like those a lot. They’re a little price but I could buy just one of the 3000 gph to ere on the side of caution. These may be perfect for what I’m going for.

I can post other pictures if you want to see any of my recent pictures.

Yeah, that would be awesome if you don’t mind.

Yeah I always hated the idea of those huge boxes in the tank, taking up all that space. I wouldn’t mind it in a much larger set up but I just think in a 180 two of them is too much.

Here are a few more. The first two are from when the tank was first setup about a year ago. The other ones are more recent full tank shots after I added the driftwood. They help show how much more spacious it is than a tank with the overflow weirs.

I strongly recommend going with three 1.5” overflows in the back of the tank. Then you can use two of them in full siphon and one as a trickle emergency drain. That is what I have done here. The returns can be drilled through the back or run over the top. I run about 1600gph with my setup and it is completely quiet thanks to my Jebao DCP pumps. Let me know if you have any specific questions or if you want me to post pictures of anything in particular.

Ahh man that spounds like a crappy padt few days...uggh.

Yeah i would also try truvu and fishtanksdirect. I havent heard anything bad about them..

soupa2 soupa2 has a fishtankdirect tank.

Somethings to consider and maybe pist in the set up section are thickness of the walls and the braces in the top of the tank.

I was told for my tank i could have gotten away with 1/2 inch panels but i wanted it over built so i went with 3/4 and 3 top braces (im sure most builders would automatically go with 3 braces) at 3/4 inches it was still cheaper than a glass tank that has thinner panels i was shocked.

I heard that acrylic trades like a commodity so the prices of panels fluctuates. So it could be cheaper/higher at different times

im going to skip all the reading and i;m lately out of the loop on Monster after a fish death.. but J jaws7777 i have a truvu tank.. the sales or owner is called scott great guy to work with.. one thing i catch on custom tanks is that the overflow box edges are very sharp so if fish runs into the corner the fish will damage it's jaws..

Man, you guys are going way above the call of duty on this one. Lol I’m going with a 55 sump as well. Three questions. Do you have any problems with evaporation causing the water level to go below your drains? Also do you have anything other than the heaters in the middle refugium? And what size did you go for your returns to the tank?

I was going to go acrylic but I couldn’t justify the extra cost in terms of being able to spend more on filtration.

Plus I have two little ones that I’m sure would scratch it on almost a constant basis lol

well it all depends on the size you want on the tank than filtration comes along... i have a 330 (78x36x28"h) and i originally had a 300 marineland deep dimension which leaked on me.. and that filter was a standard 125 gal underneath.. silicone the 125 with baffles was a cake and only would take maybe 1 day of your setup time to do so..oh underneath my post you'll find my old setup and how i silicone my sump up..GL

DRteugelsi DRteugelsi lots of ways to skin a cat but i do not like the idea if having 2 siphon drains and 1 e drain. It defeats the purpose of having an e drain. 2 1.5 inch siphons are gonna move a hellava lot of water more than you would need on a 180. I have two 1.5 inch siphons tied into 1 gate valve on my tank amd went with 2 - 2inch e drains the gate is barely opened and my pumps are on the 4th or 5th setting.
Most people size there filtration around their pumps or siphon drains but thats a huge mistake. The point of herbie/bean animal systems are the fail safes. The 1st thing you have to take into considerarion is what gph do i want to be around ? And can my e drain handle it ? If not then larger e drains or less flow.

1.5 inches is great and you will be dialing the gate back allot but you can achieve closer to where you want to be with 1 inch drains and again you will be dialing that gate valve down allot.

Either way you need two e drains not 1.

Also i like the idea of overflow boxes for a few reasons.

Plants, dead fish, or what ever need to get past the wier to clog the drains directly.

Another reason is if i need to do any work with the stand pipes ir plumping the water level wont drop below the wier on overflow boxes.

If it were me i would go with internal overflows.
