Donate them to your LFS if they'll even take it. I see big Pacus for sale all the time for $5.00. My cousin got a Pacu he's had for 15+ years in a 125g. This fish is so big he cannot turn around. It has to go vertical and struggle to make a turn. He just basically just moves forward and backwards.

that fish is so badly stunted by now. Does it look slightly distorted? kind of stretched out? most likely it's internal organs are still growing while it's outter body isn't

Well he's a monster! must 10" thick! I don't know exactly how big it is. He's raised it from a little guy. Its been a family pet for so long he can't get rid of it. The fish is older then his daughter. Its practically tame hand feeds it grapes. I at one time years ago was going to sell him one of my 300g tanks i had, but it never happen.

I have to agree that pacu are not something that should be sold.

They are one of the only fish that I have truly been frightened to have had in a glass tank. Such mass moving so fast when they get spooked.

I've seen customers raise pacus to 20"+ 125s. We get 12"+ pacus in on a weekly basis from trade ins and we don't even sell them because of their eventual size. Most of these pacus end up getting killed by the hoards of oscars that customers bring in and we have to house or in 55 gallon tanks (No kidding). Probably every month or so I talk to a customer over the phone who plans on donating their large pacu to the zoo or the aquarium. The truth is, these places cannot take in multiple 12"+ pacus every month.

If you cannot find anybody to take him, chances are he will reach his full 3' in your tank and you will have to choose between waiting and hoping somebody takes him or euthanasia.

In case you do euthanize the pacu, many people try to "beat" the fish with 2x4s or similar methods which almost never works on pacus. If you do euthanize it, clove oil is an anesthetic to fish and in high enough concentrations would euthanize the fish after it is unconscious.

Yes, clove oil is perfect. I've used it on old female guppies and such. They just fall asleep at about three drops per gallon and then you add even more clove oil and they slowly stop breathing.

Sorry about your predicament - I was in the same boat with a Pangasius cat a while back. Unfortunately (fortunately?) a Stealth heater melted down and did in that particular fish. :(

I noticed your username and have to ask - You didn't grow up in Oregon, did you? My older brother had a good friend growing up named Jeff Moorhead.

did you try calling sea world in San Antonio...
