Get a male as they get larger. Mine is around 80lbs and sends people to the other side of the street when they walk by. They are great with kids and easy to train but make sure you are more strong willed than it is.

My neighbors brother came outside to smoke. He had never seen Finn before. I my dog bark and someone say HEY HEY HEY!. I go outside and the guy is hugging the side of the house with 10ft and a 6ft chain link fence separating them. Finn wasn't trying to be menacing but his presence in a dark ally is intimidating. I put the dog inside and the guy just looks at me and says..."thats a big mother F**kin dog, man"
Hope that gives you some ideas.
I love Airedales. Next to pit bulls that would be my choice for a guard dog. Unfortunately my wife thinks they look funny so she won't let me get one.
I got you beat on the "big mother f**kin dog" comment though. I've had people drive by, turn around and drive back just to tell me "those are big motherf**kin dogs!". As if I didn't already know it. They're 35" at the shoulder, 210 lbs.
Wolfhounds are big pussycats though, not very good guard dogs. I think for a dog biscuit they would show a burgalar where the jewelry box was.
