I've seen a few tanks now that have the water level quite a way below the top of the tank, personally I keep my level above the wood edging at the top of mine, but below the glass covers. What's your levels and why?

a little under the trim, used to be higher, but cautious about it now, as a few years back had a tank flood over on the second floor while i was gone, and came home to a dripping ceiling.

I was under the impression you had to at least keep the water level at the trim level, to keep water pressure from busting seams or glass? or is this an urban legend?

i was just about to start a thread about this, but you beat me to it, i was wondering the same thing, why do i see tanks with water levels 2"-3" below the trim line? is there a reason or just owner preference? i keep mine right at the trim line

I keep mine at about an inch and a half below the trim. The way I have my fluval fx5 output, there seems to be more water circulation (the output sits just above water level when the level is lower than trim).

More water circulation = More top water movement = happier fish :)

I like to have the water probably .75"-1" below the very top of tank tank. The catch is that my parents insist that having it that high will cause damage to the light from the water evaporation when I even have a cover covering everything. :screwy: They make me take it down to 2-3". I tell them more water equals a more stable environment but they're too stubborn.
