Below (way below amature) since i killed more than a thousand bucks worth of fish in a tank crash caused by an unplanned forced tank move.

oh you meant water level as much water as my built in overflows allow...i hate the look of a water line

i keep my water level about 1 inch shallow of the trim, i have a rope fish that likes to play escape artist.. i have even found him inside the filter just hanging out

I fill until the water hits the center brace (glass brace), then I back it down until it doesn't touch. I hate water lines, as well as excess tank noises. I have ropes, bichirs, had eels, they all do fine. Just have to keep he tank covered. Granted it does help that I got rid of 2 powerfilters and went to all canisters. I also like the fact of getting as much water into the tank as possible.

I keep mine about 1/4" below the trim. I'm not 100% trusting of my diy overflow, and I can know if all is well by just taking a quick peek at the water line.

I can't stand filter noise, I keep mine filled to the brim.
