WHO the hell says you cant have an oscar in a 55? as long as you have the filtration, you can keep them in almost any tank over 40 gallons. ALL YOU NEED IS ENOUGH FILTRATIOS AND DO YOUR WATER CHANGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

55g oscar setup
1 oscar
1 L204 Pleco
2 Emperor 400 HOB filter
1 Magnum c 350
50-75lbs Sand substrate
2 170gph powerheads with pre-filters
and enough cover for him to hide.

Simple, easy, and he will be happy with his pleco friend

I can sleep in a coat closet ... its just terrible.

On another note ... I agree the carpintis would be too big in the long run, I thought I read earlier it was being upgraded. My bad.

i have kept oscarS in a 55 gallon before and they do just fine. they are an awesome fish that deserves bigger but honestly most oscars DONT get to live in a 55 gallon tank. and this is coming from many years working in a private fish store. oscars, jack dempseys and convicts would be my choice, but not all together. also they are some of the most underrated fish, they make great pets and are very entertaining to watch.

That's why I'm happy that in Holland they don't sell Oscars and Midas everywhere. Over here they get the tank sizes they deserve.;)

When it comes to water quality, yes it's possible. But I kept a 13 inch Blackbelt in a 75 hospital tank (not even 55) and the tank just looked too small. I would never keep a fish of that size in such a tank, but that's just my own opinion.

i wouldnt keep a oscar in a 55 permantly when it comes to filtration it works but the oscar itself wont its a tempo tank..

are you saying the oscar will have poor quality of life? That it won't maintain it self as long as its fed and its water is clean? As long as it can swim a few body lengths and is able to turn around I don't see it not working out.

Simma down now...and Welcome to MFK

...stick around a little longer and read some threads and youll understand why most frown upon keeping an oscar in a 55.

NO ONE is HONESTLY willing to do 25% daily or 50% 2x a week water changes (I dont care what they say) and thats what it would take to keep a semi healthy oscar in a 55...and it wouldnt be a good environment for an oscar. Oscars can get bigger than 12 inches and a 55 is only 12 inches deep.

Happy learning!

I like the Salvini choice. They have great coloration. It would fit very well in a 55 for a long time. You are right about Oscars in a 55, it is only temporary housing for a cichlid with its potential adult size.
