i dont think there is a general answer that can be given for everybody. if you truly like a fish it will always be worth buying, even if it cost as much as a car. you will cut living cost and save up tell you can afford it.

a fish is only overpriced if you dont like it. i dislike fancy goldfish with there deformed bodies, to me the 3 dollar price is too much. But i have also spent 70 dollars on a saltwater tang before.

good points but please don't overthink the topic and turn it into what the other thread turned into. i'm not searching for a unison answer i just want to hear which fish don't turn out to be worth their price from different perspectives and their reasoning for it.

Gotta love Pacus
My LFS sells them $15 for a 12" fish
they show some personality and well worth it

i would say that zebras and labs of lake malawi are a pretty nice pick up for less than 10 bucks if you buy them small. pretty cool fish for the money, and you can always breed them for more

So if I don't go hungry because I want a fish, I don't really like/want it? :screwy:

very few people are actually in a position where the phrase "cut living expenses" or even "tighten you belt" means skip meals. although it may mean not eating at expensive restaurant, instead eat at home. few people have no disposable income. think about how much money a month most people waste on cable when you could get most shows online. people that buy a new car when they could just get a used one. everybody has something they do with there money.;)

after doing a saltwater reef tank for many years i can see how alot fish are sold for the price there marked at.

people say saltwater fish are expensive but take these fact into consideration. most saltwater fish are wild caught, and are extremely difficult to breed in captivity. alot of reefs are dying so most fish are losing there habitats. the number of fish in the ocean is constantly dwindling from fishing. alot of countries prohibit fishing or havesting on reefs to protect there populations. these fish must be shipped from around the world to make it to your lfs. the expensive equipment that must be purchased for the holding facilities between destinations. in my short time in the hobby(around 5 years) i have seen the prices double, probably from declining populations and increase shipping prices.

if had to pick fish that i considered overpriced it would be show quality koi or discus. really any fish that goes for more then $50, that is easily bred in captivity and has been in the hobby for a while.

i don't know why flagtails cost so much. i know that they look gorgeous but they come from the same habitat as silver arowanas and silver arowanas cost half the price compared to them.

Koi can be cool, but i don't understand why anyone would pay over $5000 for one fish that lives outside in a pond. also, certain annual killifish species can go for $60 a pair. as cool as they look, i wouldn't wanna pay that much for something that has the lifespan of a guppy

I agree with the koi
but maybe its just because i havent had any appretiation for it

Koi, Zebra Plecos and any hybrid that causes physical deformities like the BP and those camel back catfish or hump back, whatever they're called.

These things for those who haven't seen em yet....
