usually i like to go heavy tackle just incase i really get "the big one" my bat rays set-up is a 7 1/2 ft g-loomis halibut rod a shimano tekota reel rigged up with 350 yards of 65lb braid and a 12 foot g-loomis with a daiwa saltiga 50h rigged up with 400 yards of 65lb braid

Nice bat-ray rig. For halibut, I like Lamiglass six and half with Avet reels. Cheaper but just as effective are uglies with penn senators. Careful with that tekota. I personaly don't like level wind reels for my heavy work, have had to many stick at just wrong moments. Also those spool releases on the tekotas can break off just by looking at them funny. Great personal use reels, they just didn't hold up to more than a season of chartering too well.

ultralight fishing is realy the way to go, i use 4-6 lb for all my fresh water

just got back from the lake using a short ul st croix through the ice :D

its a nice change from all the mediums my dad buys...

st croix ul ice rod combo with 3 lb cabelas brand ice line... 0.005 dia...

Love ultralight fishing have 2 outfits that I guess you would call ultralight.
G Loomis SR 841-2 with Daiwa Airity 1500 spooled with 1lb crystal Fireline
G Loomis TSR 902-2 with Daiwa Airity 2500 with RCS 2506 spool filled with 2 lb Siglon Basic FC.

How do you like the fireline crystal, does it cast alright, i was curious on how itd feel with such a small diameter line

my ultralite rod of choice is the bassproshops tinylite. it's a 4'6'' rod with an ultralight reel. i use 4lb on it and its a good fight for all my freshwater. success with bullheads, lmb, trout, bluegill and crappie. i want to hook up with a channel on it this year, that'd be fun. or CARP!!!

Quality wise their not the best reels, pretty similar to the shakespeare micro lite I started with, I'm not sure about that reel but I know the shakespeare didnt have instant anti reverse which is pretty important with UL.

Compact graphite body; lightweight aluminum spool; 2-bearing system; precision die-cast gears; selective silent anti-reverse; spool-applied disc drag system. Weight: 5.4 oz. Line capacity: 4 lb./125 yards. Line recovery: 22'' per handle turn. Gear ratio: 5.2:1.

that's the reel description. what does the underlined part mean? is that another name for instant ant-reverse?

Casts well, the only issue is tying light fluro leaders I double the crystal when tying an albright. Stren microfuse is very good in the light classes too.

my biggest fish landed on 4lb test was a 13lb carp....i love to go carp fishing with ultralights...i just have the shakespeare combos...when i go sturgeon fishing i have 30lb spiderwire or 20lb fireline...thats just do to the snags...and i see fish that are over 5-6' long...
