Who wants to trade natives?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK, good deal, now if I can just find one : P

So apparently they're from South America...yowza. I'm trying to decide whether to go native, or not. Do you have to have a tank chiller for natives like trout, bream, and such?
That's probably going to be my deciding factor I think...Thanks!

Man this would be great if it wasn't illegal in my state :(. I have quite the assortment right in my back yard litterally. :)

If your going to keep trout ,yes, you will need a chiller or a tank in a cold room. Most other fish should be fine without a chiller and kept at room temp.

I say go native, you will need a chiller for trout as the temp for the tank is going to have to be 55-60 but many other natives with a lot of personality do not require a chiller. :)

how aggressive are various sorts of sunfish (especially bluespotted!), bream, bluegills etc? Also other types I may be interested in are shiners, minnows (to raise as food), black crappie, dace, a few of the more colorful chubs, madtoms, & darters. *runs out of breath after reciting such a long littany of fishies* Anybody have any experience with any of these lovelies? Oh, and also redhorses....those seem beyond gorgeous : o

Those sunfish, especially bluegills, can be aggressive.

I still have a ton (100's, if not 1000's) of 1" sunfish (99% sure that they are bluegills) in my pond from this past breeding season, so give me a heads up if anyone wants to trade. I currently have 11 of the little sunfish in my 55 gallon aquarium, and they took frozen bloodworms the first time that they were offered. I'm also working on pellet training them with some success.

I'm looking for any gars (longnose, alligator, etc.), bowfin, sturgeons, paddlefish, and any other primitive native fish that have been legally collected; I refuse to trade with anyone who illegally collected the fish that are up for trade.

OK, so - again, I'm somewhat a noob, lol. How do you legally collect them? Actually, how do you collect them at all : o
I'm assuming fish traps?

Question - If I raise and breed pygmy sunfish like Elassoma evergladei, can I sell or trade these legally? I am in California if that makes a difference. Thx

Check what your state's regulations are for collecting native fish. Most states will require at least a fishing license to collect native fish and some introduced fish. You can collect them by any means that your state deems legal.
