I DO mind the annoyances with having to upgrade everything and water changes, but I also enjoy keeping fish. Although I don't enjoy 100% of what I'm doing, I'd have to do it because it leads to what I do enjoy. Completely enjoying keeping fish is impossible, but the enjoyment part outweighs the annoying part.
Sort of like school. I could of gone to a random high school that I didn't want to go to. I would have a lot less school work, I would save 2 hours from taking the train everyday, and I would get out of school an hour earlier everyday. I could of had 2 free periods(free 90 mins) and 8 classes a day rather than 10. I could have plans to drop out of high school when I'm 16, rather than waste potentially tens of thousands of dollars on college. I don't enjoy doing more work than what is required at school, but I think the benefits in the future will outweigh the extra work. If I could simply scratch a lottery card and instantly win a million dollars, I would.
And honestly, my fish are still small and I don't think they need an upgrade yet. If you look at my tank(youtube link in my sig) the oscar(needs the most space out of all my fish) is nowhere near adult size. IMO, there are more cases of overstocked tanks in monster sized tanks than averaged sized tanks that I have. On MFK, I've seen tanks of a few hundred gallons stuffed with arows, rays, dats, pbass, and a dozen bichirs. The comments? "The fish are so big it makes your tank look small." The negative "your tank is overstocked" comment suddenly becomes a positive comment. I'm not going to mention any specific overstocked tank, but if you compare my tank and the fish in it to one of the monster ones I'm talking about, my tank(for the moment at least) isn't overstocked at all. Forget in depth stuff, and simply look at the space the fish has for swimming around. Of course, there are also many monster sized tanks(containing the fish I mentioned above) that are not overstocked.
Tank space requirements are just made up by people(not the actual fish) and passed on from person to person. When I first researched oscars(probably the reason I found MFK), I was told 55g for 1 and 90g for two. If someone asked me the requirements for an adult oscar, I would have told them 55g. For the past few weeks, the requirement suddenly became 75g for an adult one. If someone asks me about an oscar now, I'll say 75g because other people on MFK say that. It's just passed on...
I'm not saying we should have goldfish in a bowl, nor am I saying I shouldn't be upgrading my tank once my oscar gets bigger. I'm just saying that average sized tanks like mines shouldn't be bashed so often when there are so many other tanks(with completely positive comments) that are overstocked to the point where a fish will bump into another fish once or twice if they swim in a straight line from one end of the tank to the other end. And again, not all big tanks are overstocked, just some of them.
I'm probably going to get hell for the three bottom paragraphs...
