I think they only picked on you because you are complaining about fishkeeping requiring work. It's great you are upgrading, and choosing to keep the fish. It's just odd to complain about it. If I said I was getting a Shelby Cobra but I had to walk a few blocks and I hate walking, wouldn't you be a little confused? Usually nobody mentions the negative aspects unless it's in a passing manner. The way you phrased it apparently led some to think you were resentful about having fish. At least, that's what it looks like to me anyway. Happy fishkeeping.

:P
I still love fishkeeping, starting a small planted tank now :grinno:

some folks on here just think because they have better fish or better tanks that they are the best fish keepers but they forget we all started out doing something wrong with our tanks (overstocking, not cycling correctly, mixing the wrong fish etc)we learned as we went along, the ones on here who act so high and mighty are procably the ones who never post pics of thier tanks anyway or just saying what they hear others on here say,i myself dont like doing water changes all the time, but i do them faithfully because i want my fish to be ok,doesnt mean i hate fish keeping or anything i am human and some times i just get lazy, but i have to do what i have to do,and any body who doubts that my fish are health, can request pics any time,it was a learning process to get to this point(for everyone)no one was born a fish keeper

Plants rock! My angelfish tank has plants.

a learning process to get to this point(for everyone)no one was born a fish keeper
Agreed, and most sane people experience pangs of remorse once they know what is going on in their tanks. It's the people who continue poor care that frustrate me. We're all learning. In another twenty years we'll probably consider today's best methods primitive and wonder how our fish survived. That is no excuse for cramming though.

me? 180G 18inch silver aro, 8 silver dollars 3-4 inches, 1 common pleco 5inches, 1 giant gourami 10 inches, 2 delhezi bichir 5-6 inches, 2 ornate bichirs 7-8 inches, 1 senegal bichir 10 inches, 1 blood parrot cichlid 5 inches.

I think it would be silly to watch someone make mistake after mistake and not tell them they're doing it wrong, no matter what the situation is. Yeah, most of us made mistakes when we started. One of the reasons for this forum is so that people can find out about those mistakes and learn how not to make them. This thread goes against that completely. It's basically "How can I do something wrong and then brag about it?" I'm really sensitive to how people view fishkeepers, and MFK'ers specifically, and I would hate for someone to wander on and see evidence of blatant abuse. They'd think this is what we do, and this is what we condone. Most of us don't.
And, yes, water-change day isn't my favorite, but I enjoy interacting with my pond and my tanks and the fish in them. I would rather change water than do a lot of things, including things that most people enjoy, like going to the beauty parlor and going out to bars. So, I guess what is being said is that it SHOULD be something you don't mind doing, because you picked the hobby/lifesyle, and if you don't like it, you might wanna get out of it before you've made those upgrades and really invested in it.

I DO mind the annoyances with having to upgrade everything and water changes, but I also enjoy keeping fish. Although I don't enjoy 100% of what I'm doing, I'd have to do it because it leads to what I do enjoy. Completely enjoying keeping fish is impossible, but the enjoyment part outweighs the annoying part.

Sort of like school. I could of gone to a random high school that I didn't want to go to. I would have a lot less school work, I would save 2 hours from taking the train everyday, and I would get out of school an hour earlier everyday. I could of had 2 free periods(free 90 mins) and 8 classes a day rather than 10. I could have plans to drop out of high school when I'm 16, rather than waste potentially tens of thousands of dollars on college. I don't enjoy doing more work than what is required at school, but I think the benefits in the future will outweigh the extra work. If I could simply scratch a lottery card and instantly win a million dollars, I would.

And honestly, my fish are still small and I don't think they need an upgrade yet. If you look at my tank(youtube link in my sig) the oscar(needs the most space out of all my fish) is nowhere near adult size. IMO, there are more cases of overstocked tanks in monster sized tanks than averaged sized tanks that I have. On MFK, I've seen tanks of a few hundred gallons stuffed with arows, rays, dats, pbass, and a dozen bichirs. The comments? "The fish are so big it makes your tank look small." The negative "your tank is overstocked" comment suddenly becomes a positive comment. I'm not going to mention any specific overstocked tank, but if you compare my tank and the fish in it to one of the monster ones I'm talking about, my tank(for the moment at least) isn't overstocked at all. Forget in depth stuff, and simply look at the space the fish has for swimming around. Of course, there are also many monster sized tanks(containing the fish I mentioned above) that are not overstocked.

Tank space requirements are just made up by people(not the actual fish) and passed on from person to person. When I first researched oscars(probably the reason I found MFK), I was told 55g for 1 and 90g for two. If someone asked me the requirements for an adult oscar, I would have told them 55g. For the past few weeks, the requirement suddenly became 75g for an adult one. If someone asks me about an oscar now, I'll say 75g because other people on MFK say that. It's just passed on...

I'm not saying we should have goldfish in a bowl, nor am I saying I shouldn't be upgrading my tank once my oscar gets bigger. I'm just saying that average sized tanks like mines shouldn't be bashed so often when there are so many other tanks(with completely positive comments) that are overstocked to the point where a fish will bump into another fish once or twice if they swim in a straight line from one end of the tank to the other end. And again, not all big tanks are overstocked, just some of them.

I'm probably going to get hell for the three bottom paragraphs...

Shouldn't discussion of animal abuse be a violation of the terms of service? I mean, some of these people aren't even sorry for what they are doing. During transition or tank breaks, it makes sense, but this ongoing cramming really shouldn't be allowed to be promoted, should it? This is like going to a dog forum and talking about which baseball bat or whipping technique can get a pitbull mean faster. You just don't do it.
I agree...

Why are you bragging about your overstocked tank? You feel good about this?

Yep.

Yeah, I agree. This is MFK (monster fish keepers), not IFC (irresponsible fish crammers).

Disagree. If you think this it is and can make a general statement like that, then I'm not sure you realize what this site is.

You keep fish in a box. I keep fish in a box. I just prefer to keep more of them. Larger ones. Whatever. You can't take something that is morally wrong altogether and then say that if it goes X far then it's too far.

Fish are unfortunately not dogs. Sure fish can have personality but they're no where near being on the same level in society.

Different strokes for different folks. Stressing proper water quality/filtration is one thing. But please go try to change another site with the "you have too many fish", "you obviously don't care and have bad morals" crap.
