Why Are Glasses So Expensive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
damn, should I get my next eye glasses from Walmart or Costco?

Even with vision coverage I still pay about $200-300 for mine and that's for non-top brand frames

It pisses me off at first but then, hey, if they can do it, more power to them

Thanks for posting this Li! I wasn't aware about this eye wear monopoly until today.

Kind of messed up what happened to Oakley

They were forced to bend over. I like it when she was grilling the dude

Why not? I dropped the vision plan about 10 years ago. I used to have eye exams at walmart or sams, but the last exam I had about 2 years ago was at a small optics shop and the new vision gave me a headache so I switched back to my old prescription. About glasses, I just bought 2x pairs of prescription sunglasses, one ray-ban and one aviator style, and a pair of full plastic frame with high index lenses and good coatings from online, for a total of ***$75***. They fit perfectly and I can see well. It was my third time ordering from the same retailer.

But damn, I bought my wife LV bags :screwy:

Kind of the same for me. I usually get my contacts and glasses from Costco, but since I switched jobs 4 years ago, I'm now completely covered including Vision. Unfortunately, Costco doesn't take my insurance so it's either out of pocket or let my insurance pay for the pricey glasses. My glasses are Ray-Ban and I have 2 designer sunglasses. I picked them out, but I didn't pay for them;) Even though I didn't pay for them myself, I still had a hard time knowing that my glasses cost my insurance $500 for a single pair of glasses and $150 for a year's supply of contacts, compared to when I paid around $170 for my glasses and contacts total from Costco.

Next time I'll look into Walmart and Costco to see if they take my insurance. I'm thinking about going back to contacts too

Oakley decided to part ways with Luxatica over money, but Luxatica controls just about all of the eyewear industry. Oakley had no place to sell their brand because Luxatica owns a lot of the stores that sells sunglasses. Basically they made it rough to the point that Luxatica bought them out.
