Why are large fish so easy to buy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Number one rule to fish keeping;

Thou shalt not listen to the LFS.

Or more likely, you need to find out if your LFS is a reliable source of information. Some are and some are not. I don't think we should get into labeling them all as bad sources of information.

$$ fo sho!

All lfs have different rules... and when making those rules (the bad ones) the livelihood of the fish is not being taken into account ... it's the $$!!!

That sounds a little scatterbrain, but you get my point..

Large fish aren't the problem, neither are the LFS. The customer who buys a fish trusting the word of a minimum wage employee and not trying to find out about their fish ahead of time is the problem. The truth is too, in a 2'x2' tank, chances are your fish won't get bigger than a foot, be it stunting or premature death. What sizes should stores advertise? Record sizes? Typical captive sizes?

When customers want fish that are tank busters, I usually would try to tell them how big the fish get, and they would say "Not in my tank!" laugh and have me catch the fish. Or I would get the occasional "I know" or "That's why I want it!". Many times, customers come into my LFS and ask for pacus or ID sharks. We explain why we don't sell them, and then they ask "Well who does?" and just head over to our competitor.

If a customer wants a tank buster for their 55, not much is going to stop them.

Where I work, we always try to steer customers in the right direction regardless of money. We pass up many sales because customers couldn't find a RTC that stays small, or didn't know aquatic frogs need filters. However, more often than not, the customers just don't care and buy it anyways. It's great to see everybody blaming greed and LFS' desire for money when I bet none of them have worked at a LFS.

x2

A lot of LFS will tell you whatever they think will make you buy a fish. I have never listened to a word someone has said at any LFS since I joined this site. You are much better off doing your own research.

I don't mind that big fish are available. It's really up to the buyer to be responsible when purchasing a fish. I don't think that some people should have to go through hell to get a big fish just to protect other people from themselves.

I would just be more careful next time. Good luck with your catfish.

ur fault for not looking it up before purchasing too ;) not that its right for the lfs to not tell u but they need to make a living too. just be more informed next time when u purchase a fish:thumbsup: or find a better more reliable lfs

No need to beat up on the OP, he's here right!!

and I dont' think that generalizing the LFS as a bad source of info is wrong also... Although there is a need to get to know these people if you go there often enough.. at my favorite LFS there is one dude that is good at what he does.. and I like the info he gives and I know, for the most part he is going off of experience.. you can't take anyones's advice but some are really good at what they do...

You know some of the most informative people here on MFK work at an LFS or have in the past? ... So your saying that your wouldn't take this persons advice just because he worked there... it would be your loss...

Huge difference. The people on here aren't trying to sell me a fish. They have no reason to stretch the truth. When money and a boss is involved even the most honest LFS worker will lie for a sale if he thinks it is in his best interest in terms of keeping his job and keeping his boss happy.

It takes two to tango. It is up to the buyer to do their own research. But the LFS also has the responsibility to provide accurate information and advice. Far to many scum bags own LFS's and provide false information just to make a sale.
